BTW, speaking of lazy lurkers, I suppose I should get off my butt and add to the Falling in Love thread. I'd promised that my next post there was going to describe the night I met my TGF. Hmmm, maybe I'll knock down a beer tonight and ponder this one .... - Balls

Quote: from nokna on 11:51 am on Oct. 10, 2003 Fastmover complained about older members having a go because members have/had a go at newer members because of silly questions asked. an example?. BK Boiler has just made a reference to him losing his Virgin status on the board and wondering why?. this is a VERY OLD subject and easy to find the answer to,more than one thread on it. why is it so hard to find the answers?,another example of 'do a search',why could not BK Boiler be bothered to do a search?. but i will probably be deemed to be in the wrong for having a go at him. but to me he was lazy and did'nt bother to do any research, the answer is on the Forum. but some people are just too f***ING LAZY. and then they wonder why people leave?,people just get fed up with all the idiotic things going on.
Mr. Nokna and others, Think media. If you walk into a magazine store do you read or buy all the magazines? No. Only the ones that you want. If you are watching TV do you rant and rave about some idiot game show, or some stupid MTV video. No. You use the remote and change the channel. Get it? The internet is a form of media. If you do not like a particular thread, use your mouse (it's the new remote), click to another thread, or, something you cannot do with your TV, start a NEW thread about something you want to talk about. Forums are media! Mr Nokna you said...."this is a VERY OLD subject." To newcomers, there are NO OLD subjects. Again, another way? To newcomers, everything is new. That is the point older members forget over and over and over and over. Forums and the internet are high speed interactive forms of communication. Information NOW please. "f***ING LAZY?" No. f***ing connected. Are the older members of this forum really convinced that what they posted years ago is well written, concise, and orgainized is such a fashion as to be helpful at the touch of a mouse. I suggest your memory of what you think is great information posts are scattered and fractured through out this forum. They are there for sure, but why bpther searching through 86,000 plus posts. Why not just post your question, say hi,and see what the answer is or perhaps who in interested enough to respond and COMMUNICATE. That is what newbies do, because they also want to communicate. If they just wanted information they would buy a book. There is also the 'built in' impression when dealing with the internet information that was posted years ago, is no longer 'up-to-date'. Internet=immediate. The medium is the message. Remember? The number one problem with this forum is that SOME members do not understand the medium. If you do not like what you see posted, click on by. Internet forums. The 'new' TV. Something for everyone.

FM, Looks like I am going to have to disagree with you on this one. As late as 3 months ago, if a newbe asked a question that was already discussed on the net he got a resounding UTFSE.. I beleive that half of the questions asked by newbes are because they want to post a thread but have nothing concrete to offer (yet!). You yourself prided yourself on the fact that you have yet to start a thread. The fact is that the newbies cannot be bothered to hit the other links. This is a problem that will not go away unless the older members of the forum insist that they use the links and tools before starting a thread. As a Chief Petty Officer told me once "Ensign, go sit in the corner and once you know better then you can say something" The best advice I ever had. BK! Let us flame again!!!!!! Bring on the hellfire and lets regain the high standards this forum used to have...

"Mr Nokna you said...."this is a VERY OLD subject." To newcomers, there are NO OLD subjects. Again, another way? To newcomers, everything is new" sorry, you have taken my words out out of context, why not mention the circumstances about what i wrote?. but surely to newcomers, not everything is new. i would imagine most people joining have read 'some' of the Forum and know of the subject matter?. how many Members have made a 1st post without reading some of the Forum contents?. i doubt a very small %,so i think i can confidently say that all the info available is 'new' so no old subjects?. look in the archives and see many of the threads which have been inactive for many months. there might be much info to be found which might help people out. "i suggest your memory of what you think is great information posts are scattered and fractured through out this forum. They are there for sure, but why bpther searching through 86,000 plus posts" i and others can bother to search through these posts, why are others so lazy?. then they wonder why they get slammed.

fastposter, like it or not the forum is in a sense dominated by those who post the most (including now the likes of you and DG). About 10% of the forum members account for about 85% of the posts. Thus, in a sense, what is really read by the remaining 90% are the basically posts of a minority. Each one of those prolific posters has a different style. There are some more idiotic than others. Some smarter, some monodimensional, some others too complex to even understand. In other words, a little bit of everything. They each manage to represent a bigger group out there who only come to read. You must the champion of a group out there who like your posts -some others like nokna's posts. Some like ABC's, some like mine and so on. We do not always agree on everything because we all are diferent. But we -most of us- seem in this thread to agree to disagree with you. Why do we miss some of those +++ posters? Because we feel we got to know them by reading their posts day after day. And now they are not here. Same like you would miss a regular contributor to a newspaper that had a column for years that you read every week and is suddenly gone. BTW, it is dificult to miss the people that we do not know (those who don't post). ABC, haam sup, whisper, even nokna! et al, I agree with what you guys have said in reply to fastposter.

I am neither a Newbie NOR an Oldbie having joined the Forum only 10 months ago . I am not a proliferate poster having made just over 300 posts as per ABC's always reliable statistics . SO - I am not in anyone's camp . Like the 6 Blind Men of Hindoostan there is some truth in each of the posts on this Thread - and there is also some part that does not carry water . My take is that many members have fallen silent for any one or a combination of the following reasons :- - On a matter of principle or conviction . - They do not agree with the trend the Forum is taking . - Because of Work or other priorities . - Because of problems on the Net . - Because they want to take a break , sit back and scan others' posts for a while & return later . - Because of ego ( maybe some member has insulted them OR maybe they have lost an argument & think that they have lost face ). - Because of pique . - etc. , etc. Except for those who have opted out for the first 2 reasons I would think that all those who have opted out for the other reasons will gradually find their way back - and for those who don't , maybe it is for their good and ours . For those who opted out on a matter of principle or conviction or because they see the Forum taking a trend that they do not like - I am sure we would all respect those who stand by their principles and convictions . I just hope that they would continue to lurk and that over a period of time they would find that the Forum is really NOT against their principles or convictions . In the meantime let us all realise that we all have our good points and our bad points - Newbies & Oldbies . The Newbies contribute with new ideas and opinions & the Oldies contribute with their experience and maturity. Having said all that - I really do miss Mr. Joe , Boomarang , HaamSup , Chompoo , Pinga , etc. , etc. And on the other hand I find many of the Newbies views refreshing and enlightening .

fastmover: Whether you agree or understand what the others and myself are trying to say, our opinion is just that. An opinion. You want to know who's opinion counts the most. Look no further then BK's. Did you read the forum rules. Check it out!!
Quote: from bkkz When this forum first started, its main intention was to provide as much information as possible on nightlife and entertainment in Bangkok. The best way one could do this is via the exchange and sharing, of ideas and experiences of one's travels in this wonderful Land of Smiles. However over time, as the membership has grown, the threads and messages have begun to go out of hand. Duplicate topic threads are spawning like weeds, due to the laziness of newbies. There are now plenty of trashy and meaningless threads, nothing related to Bangkok or Thailand. Many useful and informative threads have gone out of sync with nonsensical discussions, and some have evolved into meaningless arguments or hostile flames. Those fights, flames, meaningless posts and unrelated threads are a waste of bandwidth and costs money, so they end as of today, May 25th 2003. My intention is to keep the forum FREE and that can be done if costs are kept to the minimum. If you feel that you need to say something that I am not allowing, just get yourself a domain name, a hosting provider and install the software yourself. http://www.bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=26&topic=106 http://bkkx.com/rules.html
Now these rules were not there before as BK has pointed out. It's not like the seasoned members all of sudden became a problem. Who's he addressing?? The newbies. He says so in his post.
Quote: from fastmover If you do not like a particular thread, use your mouse (it's the new remote), click to another thread, or, something you cannot do with your TV, start a NEW thread about something you want to talk about.
With that thinking then why have any system of thread order. Let's just post in one long thread all the questions. Since this will eventually become so huge and unmanageable. Then you don't have to use the search engine function at all. Just keep re-asking the same question. Yes, the forum is media, but there is still some sort of order. BK has also addressed this in his post. He said that "duplicate topic threads are spawning like weeds, due to the laziness of newbies." You also eluded to a correlation between the # of members and the # of active members. Since I don't really know and remember the actual # of members 2 years ago, but I'm gonna say 1,500 members. Of those 1,500 members over 100 were probably actively posting on a daily to weekly bases. Out of that 100, I'm sure that more then 50% were seasoned members. So, We got to know one another and exchanged information about all things in bkk and not just the p4p scene. There was no need for rules about what to post, where to post, ect. We all just knew what was expected and just did it. We now have 4000 members still only 100 people actively posting. But out of that 100, 20 are from the seasoned members and 80 are newbies or members that post here and there. If you ask me, I'd prefer to have a smaller # of member with a higher % of them being active (newbies and vetrans) and not a one post here and a one post there two weeks later. In closing, the ONLYopinion that matters is BK's. This is not a democracy. So, if you or others can't play by the rules, then I suggest you just leave. As you pointed out, it's like TV, so I suggest you or others don't look at this channel any more. Or as BK said "get yourself a domain name, a hosting provider and install the software yourself." ** This is not to say that the newbies are the sole reason the forum is the way it is. We are all responsible for it's direction. Newbies are needed to keep the forum growning and adding information. I just feel that recently there are more and more newbies that don't know the rules or don't care about the rules and that is bringing the forum down.**

Wassup my dawgs! I feel it is my duty to report that prior to today, I had been incarcerated for a few weeks due to a minor indiscretion committed in a state of complete and total inebriation. To add insult to injury, my computer had gone on the blink as well. It'll be at least a week before things get back to normal. Meanwhile just had to say-- really concerned about the threads I've been reading of late. Where has all the fun gone? Just a lot of 'intelligent' posts, apart from DG and Silent Bob. Maybe its the APEC blues.
