As far as the cloth held to the arm causing incapacitation I think I may have a partial answer concerning what it was on the cloth.
If I recall correctly the chemical known as DMSO has an interesting property supposedly utilized by the KGB for assassinations. Apparently DMSO is easily absorbed into the skin and takes the drug with it. Supposedly the KGB would mix a lethal agent with this and fill a large felt tip marker with it and bump into the victim and accidently write on their bare skin.
If this is true then it should be easy to mix it with any number of incapacitating drugs as well.

Another simple scam is to have you buy ladydrinks that are supposedly Tequila or such but are actually only water. After getting ripped off by this at:
Chook Dee bar in Chiang Mai near the climbing wall......
I now watch them pour the liquor and even sample it occasionally...this is how I eventually figured out it was only water I had been buying.

I was in Bangkok 2 weeks ago coming out of Soi Cowboy and was stopped by 2 young schoolgirls who were doing a survey, so I answered their questions and off I went back to the hotel. The day after I receive a phone call in the hotel telling me that all the surveys are put in a draw and that I have won 1st prize of a $1600 holiday and I have to go to the Duist Thani hotel I think to collect it. I do not know if this is a scam or if it is kosher, I ask them to just send the prize to my hotel but they did not want to. So I did not bother to go anyway. Has anyone else had this happen to them and have I been stupid and turned down a real prize or is it a scam.

Cenn3, if somebody asks Your name / Htl / room, the name is the MOST You'll give.
Reason a ) survey is a scam. If You go to the meeting, they start to sell timeshares or whatever WITH AN ATTITUDE !
And heaven forbid, if You drink or eat something and do not buy their wares, the bill will be  huge.
b) if they get Your room number AND they can be sure You are not in there ( and how could You, You are standing on the street and talk with them ), one phonecall sends the cleaners.
c) Then there are massive amount of other scams which can be done with that data.

With regard to the Timeshare sales, there are so many going on in BKK, Pattaya and Phucket.
I just say sorry I live here, does help if you can say this in Thai as well.
I hasten to add I dont, but I do visit 3 to 4 times every year, so pretty knowledgeable when they ask me the odd question.

this timeshare scam has been mentioned before.
I found that the type of work you do make a difference if you win if I can use the word.
say you are unemployed or in a job paying little,or tell aloads of bollucks. Never say you work in the IT industry or the like you will get woken up by one of these pratts at an ungodly hour

I tell them with a straight face that my doctor has given me 3 months to live. That shuts them up pretty quick. As it is so bloody hot and I am hung over, I usually look the part.
They can be very insistent and quite a pain otherwise.
There was one girl in Bangkok, outside the Westin, who only wanted to know what country I was from, no name or hotel. For that I got a nice little pin of a dragonfly as a keepsake. Must have been from TAT or something to see where we all come from. Was she ever cute.
