I don’t mind a member getting on my case for an indiscretion or a slight I may have caused. If it’s just a ‘flame’ or an unjust ass chewing, then I’d really hope they had the balls to say it to my face if they feel the need to post it. No worries either way.
If people think I over paid for that 4 day stay in Pattaya, so be it. Money wasn’t an option that trip and normally isn’t when I take my 3 or 6 month vacations from the hell hole known as Iraq. I get paid very well, don’t mind tipping and/or buying drinks, food, etc for friends. It’s my money and only I choose how it gets spent.
With that said, ummmm Yurune …look me up in December and I’ll see if I can swing a new scooter for you…555
All in all, tipping is a ‘personal choice’ one makes. No one should second guess the person without knowing all of the information at hand. To do is not only ‘rude’ but unjust and mostly uncalled for.
Anyways, people are people, they do what they want, when they want and how they choose. Let em be if they are happy and content.

The one thing about tipping at restaurants I keep running into in BKK is the bogus 10% service charge in addition to the 7% VAT. I know a number of ladies who work in these establishments, and in the majority of cases, the 10% goes straight to the house, not the waitresses/waiters. Maybe to help pay the rent?
Problem is, most farangs see the 10% service charge and equate it to same same in farangland, where the wait-staff divies up the spoils. So the ladies end up getting little or no tip at the end of the evening, unbeknownst to the customers, unless it is pressed into their hands by the customers.

I agree with BB...I try to remember to 'Hand Tip' at restaurants so the waitresses/waiters get to keep the tip I've chosen to give.
I never knew that the restaurant was keeping the 10% add in. Good information to have for the next time I'm back in-country.

Some hotels do distribute the 10% amongst the staff. However, it is divided over all the staff, so the persons that do serve you directly get less. So, leaving an additional tip for them would be a nice touch.

u blokes dont understand the "fun" we had, at our 1st stop we spent 14k in a shitty little bar just before Walking street, (and barra only had diet coke and I was only drinking in moderation), the fun we had there was priceless. Night went from great to better, if any of you have the pleasure of meeting Dfresh its all about having fun, money dosnt enter into it, try and touch him for a baht and see how you will end up...flat on your ass. The Bloke dodges bullets and missiles for a living and never knows if there will be a tomorrow.
The little happy TG was great fun, the 30k wasnt entirely spent on her alone, Barra and Wowser were in the mix. Luckily she was new at the game and has been ruined now that Dfresh being teh shy guy that he is only gave her a gallop or ten, I myself dont care what I spend so long as I am having having fun, but I dont usually come home with much change out of 5k AUD over 2 weeks, its only money and guess what, you cant take it with you so enjoy it while u can.
Yurune does that bike need trainer wheels?

Wise move... many times, a service charge is a tip for the owner.
And I know of more than one restaurant/bar that even the tip left on the tray DOES NOT go to the service staff. Some places, not all of it goes to the service staff and some places, NONE of it goes to the service staff. And even asking the waitress about this - she may only tell you what she has been instructed to tell you. I always tip directly (hand-to-hand) when leaving, it is the only way to be sure it goes to her.
My little friend "Snow" has been a waitress in at least 4 gogos and I love hearing her stories about tips, cashier bill padding, etc.

The one place I always seem to 'Over Tip" is at Toxic Bar. My first trip back to Thailand last December05-January 06, I brought a little bit of the SoCal with me into the bar. I made up a “Tip Jar” for the Bar Staff <Jen and Eg> and tried to ensure it was stocked full of 20’s, 50’s and most times, 100’s. The idea caught on quite well and most nights they were able to split at least 500 to 1000bt in tips.
I’ve never had a bad night parting at Toxic, so I always try to help liven the place up by buying the staff drinks <no one likes to drink alone> and I even buy the British Bar Manager/Owner RTB a drink or two cause he’s usually such a ‘Sour Puss’…555 He’s a straight up guy who even told me a few times that I’m tipping to much and to save my cash. No worries at all…I did appreciate his trying to look out for me though! Didn’t work out though…555
Great choice in Toxic to hold the Weekly RT’s too!! Easy access in and out, short walk to the main drag and short walk to Soy Cowboy for ‘nightly window shopping’…555

Thailand is a non tipping country and I follow what the Thai's do. I leave the loose change at a restaurant and when I'm in a cab, I round up. Just like the Thai's do.
