Last month on a friday evening in Pattaya both me and the Machine each just finished having an oil massage and we are walking down soi 3 when this guy approaches us and asks if we are American? We both say no and he says ok and walks away slowly looking a little lost and troubled. Machine says to him, "hey does that really matter"? "What are you looking for"?
The guy comes back and asks us where we are from UK or AUS etc...? we answer UK and AUS. Next he tells us he has been travelling through Asia and its his first time in Thailand and just got to Pattaya and last night he maybe got a little too drunk and lost or had a small bag stolen. He says inside the bag was all his money, credit cards, passport etc. He says he has nothing and luckily a guest house has taken him in until he can get himself sorted.
Says he rang his bank in New York using his mobile phone (the only thing he has left) and cancelled his credit cards and the bank will be sending him $2500 emergency money on Monday. Says the banks are closed for the weekend now and so unfortuntely he has no money to buy food etc till Monday. At this point I consider lending him Bht2000 but then the Machine suggest he calls his bank and asks them to send the money via Western Union. I suggest he calls friends and family to do the same.
He says oh ok with a straight face and begins to walk away and I guess he realised he forgot to thank us so he turns around briefly and says thanks but still doesn't really look too happy. We both agree though he seemed connvincing very likely a con artist.
Later that evening it occurs to me that the US is probably at least 10 to 12 hrs behind Pattaya so it is still Friday morning in New York and the banks are still open so he could have arranged for them to send him some money and collect from a bank or Western Union here. So definately a con artist in my books, if not then at least we gave him good advice!

High season means high scam season too. Noticed the "Filipinos" are back in town. I have been approached 2 times in the last week. Never really learned what the scam is but it usually begins with "where did you get those shoes" "wow it sure is raining, where are you from." Have been talked up Sukhumvit Road, MBK, Starbucks, Emporium, in the past few years. They sometimes go as far as to say they work undercover with the Indonesian FBI. WTF over.
These are really basic unimaginative Filipino guys with the obvious accent. As my shoes are usually old running shoes and who would care where I got them unless they were up to no good. Like I say never learn what they are peddling, I told the last guy I was from the Philippines and a con man when he asked where I was from. Got a good laugh out of him.
Also have been approached by 2 Filipinas who say they are from Sabah Malaysia (again obvious PI accent) in front of Landmark Hotel, with "where you get that t-shirt."

An amusing, effective but low cost scam I encontered on trip before last. Walking down sukumvit up near soi 24 and guy ( thai ) asks in reasonable English if I have coins as he has none to use pay-phone, didn't give it a second thought and handed over a couple of 10BHT coins and a few others ( maybe 40- 50 BHT ) and kept walking. 5 minutes further down the road I realised I had left my mobile at the hotel and did a u-turn,, you guessed it as I passed back by the payphone he had a couple of Japanese tourists fishing in their pockets for change,, I just smiled and kept going, I don't think he noticed me,,,, and my return from picking up my mobile phone he had a couple of Pommies handing over change. Shit I figure this guy was pulling maybe 300-400 BHT an hour and not stealing

What I want to know is,what is the angle with the Indian Fortune tellers? How do they get money from you? One was shouting at me the other day "You are very lucky man,shall I tell you why?"I always walk straight past but almost stopped when he followed up with "I know your Mothers name" fortunately good sense prevailed and I walked on.
Has any one ever listened to their full spiel?
