One MrLucky usually requests US$100 if he can guess your mothers name.
The other goes through the numbers and colors game and if he guesses you correct, you are expected to pay a lucky tip to him.
I caught the second guy out one day and told him his lucky tip is stuck in my wallet.
The first MrLucky said to me one day 'sir you have a very lucky face' I said 'I just got diagnosed with cancer' his turbin nearly fell off.

On Silom down by the Hindu Temple (wat kaek) a couple months ago, was approached by a thin Thai girl in her mid twenties who spoke passable English. She said she'd come her from Banbpli or some such suburb to apply for a job and now she hadn't enough money to get home. If I could give her half the fair (she wanted 45baht) she said she could walk the rest of the way. This is what she said. She was skinny and pathetic and all pimply faced; kinda looked like a junkie to me. A month later I saw her still walking around, or wisping around, as junkie types tend to do. So either she got her job afterall or she's still on the job with her con.

Candid Camera (a US television show) was doing a gag at a pay phone in Times Square (NYC) a few years ago when what appeared to be a homeless man stepped into the phone booth. At the end of the gag when asked who he was trying to call, the man responded that he was calling for a limo to take him to Atlantic City.
During the ensuing conversation it was revealed that he was a high-roller at the Trump Casino and went there every three months usually dropping several thousand dollars. He said he usually received 50 - 60K USD each year in begging.
How is that for a scam...

this one just happened to me, just this afternoon
someone calling from a number and blocking their ID
a recording says I've won a prize, and to press 9 to talk to the staff
the lady then asks my details, and as always can't even get my name right, and is asking if I am Thai or not
figured the whole thing would end when she found out I wasn't Thai
I've never known a foreigner to win a prize from a company or any of those drawings or anything
I suspect we are exempt from such winnings, since the majority of Thai people think we are too well off to need such a prize winning
then she explains that with a promotion between their company and Nokia they are giving away prizes and I won 2nd, which is worth 60k Baht
after tax it's only 57k
and they want to know what bank I have an account with
my response "Almost all of them"
they choose BKK Bank, which by chance has almost no money in the account, so I go with this
they tell me to go to an ATM of BKK by 15:20, and it's already 14:50
I said I'd check my balance on-line and she says no, it has to be at an ATM
I had already been suspicious of giving away my account number, but since there's very little money in there, no worries
but when she said it HAD to be an ATM, well now I am wondering WTF is the difference, considering my balance is going to show online just as well as it will at the ATM
she says a man (can't remember the name) would call me at 15:20 to make sure I got the deposit
he did call and asked if I was at the ATM yet
I lied and said I was, so proceeded to check my balance online
and said NO, it's not there
then he asks what my balance was the last time I checked. My answer got him asking me what other banks I used and if they could xfer the money there
I nearly started to LOL, but instead said that I was too damn busy to be shuffling around to different banks this afternoon
to which he replies that I don't need to go to another bank, I can use my other bank's card to check my balance there
and my reply was that yes, that would work fine, if I had the other bank ATMs on me, which I did not, and had no time to go back to my place to get them
at this point the conversation was terminated and there is no change in my account balance
I really wonder WTF they are doing. It's got something to do with the ATMs, and I find it rather scary to imagine how they are ripping people off thru the banking system if they know their account number

Now, that they have your account number, they can find out your first name and most likely your last name if it is not too long. this can be done via the ATM.

yes, just by starting a transaction to my account
I've seen it a few times myself when TGs ask me to send the money for a bus ticket or whatever
but I doubt knowing my name will do them much good

I stopped one time for one of those Indian "You have a very lucky face, sir" guys. I was really curious to figure out their scam, but at the same time, I didn't want to actually get scammed.
Anyways, the guy says, "I know your mother's name. Will you give me 500 baht if I can tell it to you?"
Now I figure there is no way in hell he can know this, particularily since it's a unusual name, and I've never communicated it to anyone in LOS, so I figure if he can really tell me my mother's name, then he deserves 500 baht. I say, Okay, tell me."
At this point he pulls a piece of paper and pencil out and hands them to me, saying, "Write your mother's name on this paper, sir. Not worry I will not look at it."
Hmm, okay, now I know this guy is not a legitimate psychic, and somehow he is going to get the information I write on this paper, but I really wonder how? The guy takes a few steps away to ensure my privacy. I look around to see if there is someone else watching me, or a camera, but don't see anything - so this must involve some sleight of hand. Cool! I love magic. I want to see this guys technique... but as insurance I say to him, "Okay, I'll write it down, but if I ever lose sight of this paper then the game is over and you owe me 5 baht."
"Yes sir, very good sir."
"You understand what I'm saying, right?"
"Yes sir, you will not lose sight of the paper."
Hmm. Seems pretty confident. This should be good. I hunch over and write my mother's name on the paper, shielding it from view as best I can from all sides. The guy tells me to fold it in half three times and then hold it tightly in my palm. I keep an iron grip on the thing as I fold and palm it, as he comes back into range.
At this point he starts talking about all kinds of crap, that seems like he's fishing for information, but I suspect is more of a distraction. Then he asks me to open my palm face up.
I remind him, "If I lose sight of this paper, then the game is over and you owe me 5 baht, right?"
"Yes, sir. Yes sir."
I open my palm and he blabbers on about what a lucky man I am for awhile - then he says, "With your permission, I am going to pick the paper up for just a moment sir."
Here it comes... I figure that if he can somehow get the info off that paper without my losing sight of it he still deserves the 500, so I agree, but again remind him of my conditions.
He picks it up and waves it in front of his face very quickly, twisting his hand so that I briefly lose view of it - if I had blinked I probably wouldn't have noticed this - but I did notice it, and say, "Give me my 5 baht."
"Sir, you are a very lucky man..."
"I lost sight of the paper, so the game is over..."
"But sir..."
We repeat this pattern a few times, then I turn and walk away, with him chattering at my back. I'm still curious though, how he was going to get the info off the paper.... my best guess is that he'd pass the real paper to someone nearby, who would then open it behind me in a way that the fortuneteller could read over my shoulder... but who knows...
