I have just finished reading Stephen Leather's e-book Private Dancer. I think this should be prescribed reading for any Newbie to LOS (I am talking to males here). Although some (if not all) of the Characters are over the top it does give you an insight into the Bar-girl life and scene, particularly with the view that we (Farangs) are seen as basically a walking ATM and that many have Thai boyfriends/husbands whilst pledging love to us. I know this happens as one girl who I had known as a regular in the bar but never taken before said to me as I asked for LT. ' OK but I have to go at 06.30 as I have to get my daughter ready for school and buy food for my husband' just seems bizare. As I said many of the characters are over the top but that did not stop me for recognising attitudes and attributes in myself and people I have met in LOS bar girl and farang. Anybody else read this book? What did you think. Perhaps BK you may need to replicate this as a seperate thread!! just thought it was relevent with regards to the attraction to us all of LOS.

i think most of us will have read the book, but i'm glad i read it after 3 visits to LOS. if i had read it before my 1st visit,it might have predudiced my mind towards the girls and i might have treated the girls differently. as it was i was innocent of the scene and made my own mind up and because of it,i made good contacts and friends. but as a novel, many of us can identify with some of the situations and it can be a good indicator to some of the pitfalls waiting for us in LOS.

As a procurement proffesional...The caviout we get taught is 'Buyer beware' always a good thing to have in mind. I agree with you if I had read the book before my first visit it would have predjudised me., but it may have also made me more aware of the situations that can arise.. I mean I didn't fall head over heels with a bar-girl until my second year and my forth trip...

It has been nearly 2 months since I returned to my home and native land from LOS. And I was wondering... This feeling of sadness, lonliness (even when people are around), the feeling of not quiet belonging in your own land... where have I experienced it before and do you guys experience it too? Then it occurred to me, where did I get this feeling of "emptiness" before? I certainly never experienced it in realy life before my visit to LOS, but where did I "feel" the sensations? Ahh... when I read 1984 Scary, isn't it? Or am I the only one who feels this way? I guess I am. I am not even sure why I am writing this. It is definitely a thoughtcrime and definitely LOS is just an illusion, some sort of false memory.

Aryan6 I think you have captured that strange sense of sad disorientation very well. There's always a lot more to the blues than just missing Thailand & the BGs. At least there was in my case. I think LOS forces you to confront issues about your own society. You go back, and you see all sorts of flaws and holes in it you just weren't aware of before - things you previously took for granted as 'normal', or 'the way things are' or 'human nature'. You start wondering why people want to live like this; why you want to live like this. You feel a bit like a foreigner observing the natives and wondering what makes them so odd. And the worst of it is that there's no-one you can talk to about this stuff. OK, you can get a hearing on the 'safe' subjects, but people don't really get it. And when it comes to sex side - well, you know you're on a hiding to nothing and will only wreck your own credibility, so you shut up. As with Winston Smith, there will be real penalties if you try to speak what is very much on your mind. And that feels lonely, alienating and slightly oppressive. Yes.
