My fiancée arrived back in Australia on a Prospective Marriage Visa a month ago. We applied online for a Tax File Number, which we received in the post yesterday. The advice states a “NON-RESIDENT” status for tax purposes. I did a little research and discovered that this means no tax-free threshold and 29c tax on the dollar tax. In layman’s terms that going to just about double the tax my little lady is going to have to pay. Now I will be on the phone to the Tax department first thing monday morning, but in the meantime thought I would as the question hear. Has anyone has experienced the same, and what was the out come once you spoke to the ATO?

It's been a few years but from what I remember, when my Fiance' arrived and applied for a tax file number, she was classifies as a " temporary resident", so normal tax arrangements.
