Sorry man, but this has got to be some of the worst commercial writing I have ever read, barring some of my own. If it was an FR, fine. But if you are hoping to get this published you have a long way to go.
For starters, let us see what you are up against. People with no time for anything. You've got to sound interesting for them to say, i dont think I'll watch TV because this here Bangkok Shuffle has really got me by the shorties. Does this draft pass that test for me? I think not.
Also this Roger guy seems really soft. Does he have any flaws? He sounds just like one of a million guys who've landed up in Nana over the years. The protagonist is also telling me nothing new.
I just finished a book called Platform by a french guy called Michel Houellebecq. It is about this french bureaucrat who comes into some money and comes to LOS. Sounds predictable? It's not. If you've read it you will know what I mean.
I wanted to talk about a guy who I think is a great fiction character--Tony Soprano from the HBO tv series The Sopranos. I can relate to an anti-hero like this guy. He steals and kills for a living but comes home and teaches his kids family values. He loves his wife but f***s every stripper he auditions. He is full of contradictions, and THAT is what ,makes a great fiction character.
A phoenix rises from the ashes. Please, we know, thats what phoenixes generally do , thats how they got their name.
The Big Mango, I saw a book on LOS written by someone else by that very name.
Wish i could say 'great work fella', but i dont want to blow smoke up your ass!

Opinions are what is needed, and are appreciated......but a Phoenix can come from any burning or destroyed obeject, so I changed it for JHJr's benefit 
Like I said, work in progress and not polished or finished by any means. Just something I like to do, and if not wanted I can leave it to myself, but so far the verdict is decent.
