I spend every waking moment of my miserable air force life looking foward to these 2 week trips to pattaya,and bangkok, I take every 4 -5 months..... and I say enough is enough.. as a fellow worker from an air force/civil station I can understand your frustration. It probably comes from the cultures (?) we live in. You desires sound very much like a relatively new visitor. There are without doubt various stages people go through. Early on it's like being a kid in a sweet shop. Then comes the inevitable failed romance. Then back again for more punishment and a deeper learning of the culture. A journey of a thousand miles starts with one small step. In time I believe you will become bored and cynical with the original reasons you came to LOS and naturally move onto other lands and other experiences. "If you give a starving man a steak every day he will get fed up with steak!" - Sorry for the cliches. Bangkok is very central and useful to get to all other parts of Asia. How good is your English? Could you take an English Teachers course? Remember it is better to also enjoy the teaching experience as well as using it as a method for living in LOS. Listen to the BBC World Service and especially Alistair Cooke (who has lived in the States for many years) - Hone away any strong regional US accent. (I have the same problem as I sound like Michael Caine). Try teaching. Try travelling. Don't restrict your 'World' to just Thailand but enjoy Thailand for what it is and you will never be disappointed. Don't expect the Thais to act and think like we do as they don't.
Although not perfect and he has his critics read Stickman's Webpage. Yes, all of it, there is a lot to read.
Take all of it in as gospel then find out for uourself and see how your experiences differ as surely they will. Have fun but eventually many become bored with beer and pussy EVERY day or their money runs out first. Also beware of the scams as there are many.You wont know where you fit in with the scheme of things unless you try it. Everybody has different needs at different times. Go for it !
