Ok sooo its the weekend - how about this for a thread... Just about everyone has fallen for some scam in LOS - I know we get to see quite a lot on this site. Let's see if we can pull the BEST together. (And avoid the really obvious - or Nigerian ones) Here is a good one to start.... I used to muck around with a freelancer (reasonably sophisticated - had her own car). Anyway about the 3rd time we had sex she gave me a BBBJ and then jumped on top of me until I came. Six weeks later she rings me up.... she's pregnant. She 'knows' its me cos I am the only guy she has had unprotected sex with. She is thinking of keeping the baby cos she doesnt want to have an abortion. A couple of days later she rings again and says... well if I really dont want the baby then she will have an abortion but that I will have to pay Bt20k for the abortion. Neway I pay up. It gets even worse! About a year later I bump into her again - Rivas, I think. Yeah.... we sleep together and six weeks later the phone goes. (Yeah it usually takes someone especially stupid to fall for the same scam twice). I pay up. Then about 3 weeks later I receive an email from some guy in the US who said she had pulled the same thing on him but he didnt believe it cos he had the snip 2 years before. So he hacked her hotmail account and found that she was pulling the same trick with several guys... So there you go.... Now I know a lot of you guys will just say I was f_cking stupid and, of course, you are right. But, let's face it, we all do stupid things - and they only look really stupid in hindsight. And we have all been caught at least once... So forewarned is forearmed... etc...

Abrak, next time you get a girl pregnant, just send her over to PDA on Sukhumvit Soi 12. I hear it's only 2,000 B for an abortion.

Interesting, Never got really scam by a BG or a Freelancer but got really screw the first time I came to Thailand in 96 (I was 22 though). This was what I would describe as a well prepared scam. Going into details would be quite long but I ended up buying 4 or 5k of sh_t gem and thaugh I was making a great deal. Well I only realized I got screw 2 hours later back in the hotel.

Minor scams but some lessons learned: Had a portrait painted, from a photo, at a studio in MBK Center. There were sample portraits lining the wall by several of the artists they represent, and one painter's work was exceptional. Arranged with the gallery to have him do it, and of course had to pay extra. When I picked up the painting it was obviously done by a first-class amateur. I told them they could keep their crap and demanded my deposit back. Not only wouldn't they refund, but they insisted on keeping my personally valuable photo until I paid in full. I was furious, not at the money loss but at the bald-faced con and their arrogance. Called the Tourist Police but they said that it wasn't in their scope. Paid a visit to TAT, the Tourist Authority of Thailand which said the same. I told them that my next stop would be every newspaper that would listen and that I would also tell them that nobody in Thailand, including them, cared to do anything to help a tourist obviously scammed. That seemed to get their attention and their manager called the gallery owner. They agreed to return my photo, and agreed to credit the deposit toward any painting in their gallery. I let my TGF go there and pick out something for herself - I was still too pissed (angry). That has not stopped me from having other paintings made as there are some very talented artists in LOS, but I now make a point of only dealing direct with a painter, whose other work I can see while in progress. Oh, also took a taxi to another gallery in Phuket, told the driver the exact address and directions, and after getting some initial prices, saw the taxi driver not only still there when I hadn't asked him to wait, but now whispering with the artist for what I suspected was an obvious unearned "commission". Walked over and told them that I'm not interested. It was the principle. If the driver had found this gallery for me I would have been glad to pay him something, but otherwise considered it not kosher. I know, that's how they do business there, so now I do business accordingly different. All in all, those are extremely minor breaches in years of trust necessarily placed in many LOS merchants - so I give LOS very high marks. I would be more wary of some of my fellow farangs there. Good points, all - and I think one of the things people should realize is that scam artists exist EVERYWHERE, and LOS does not have a monopoly on scams - it just seems that there are always a few very short-minded individuals (see, Stickman Reader Reports for many of those) who get scammed once or twice, and therefore conclude that 'all of Thailand is filled with scammers'. I haven't gotten scammed (yet), but I'm sure it might happen sooner or later - then again, so it has happened in other countries as well - it's not a reflection on the entire country, and THAT, I think is the lesson that we should endeavor to pass along. Abrak this is a great idea to keep all the scams that surface in this one thread. A bit like the consolidation of the Eden information... There are (at this time) 115 instances of the word Scam spread out across this forum. Thailand or LOS as it is affectionately known, is truly the Land of Scams. Scams that could affect us all one day, more than we care to imagine. With BK's permission (and if I can find the time) I will try and recount on a weekly basis, some of the scams that have been brought to our attention here at TPE in the past. That way we will ALL be more aware. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. If there is duplication in other threads then please forgive me. Maybe the moderators can address this issue. It is for ALL our benefits to be aware of ALL the scams out there. I shall call this next scam. Touching Cloth. There are many slick scams that are set up specifically for tourists. However there is another scam out there that is not only set up for tourists, but also for unsuspecting Thai’s. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths Thai’s will go to take someone else's money. A friend, who told me his TG had run into some trouble, contacted me late last night. She (TG) had gone shopping at around 12:00noon wearing all her gold, bracelet, ring, necklace, etc, about 5 Baht in weight! Not a fortune but to some Thais a worthwhile target. We have all seen it; most Thais love (women and men) to wear their wealth like a badge of success, even when they are simply going shopping. It probably stems from having very little in the way of wealth and then achieving some sort of financial success. At least in their eyes. This would not be the case in westernized societies. Most girls would leave their best bits at home (except diamond engagement rings) and only wear the good (expensive) stuff on a special occasion. Not so the Thais, they sleep in the stuff… Anyway, when she did not come back by 16:30pm he was getting a bit concerned. He tried her mobile telephone but this was switched off. Finally 20:30pm the TG arrived home very ill and was vomiting. She was incoherent and looked and acted drunk. This in itself was very strange, as the TG did not drink alcohol being on a very strict diet…She only weighed 39 kilos and she was on a diet!!! It turned out that, as the TG was wondering round the crowded Pratunam indoor market, another Thai woman approached her and struck up a casual conversation. Then another joined in and then another. At that point the TG was feeling fine. They all took her deeper into the market where they said they knew of some good bargains. But then as they went further into the market, one woman (holding a piece of cloth in her hand) touched the TG on the forearm. The woman held the small piece of cloth on her forearm as they were squeezing through the crowds in the hot market. Not too tight, but tight enough so that the cloth stayed in contact with the TG’s skin. She said it was to cool her down (same thing as the cooling towels sometimes offered in bars). Remember this was in a narrow tight alleyway in an indoor market so there was really nowhere for the TG to go to. When she (TG) felt a little faint she was shepherded into a small food restaurant and given a drink of orange juice. But you guessed it. The orange juice was also spiked. Then the three girls went to work on the TG who was by now out of it. While two of them simply removed the TG’s gold with little or no resistance, all the time talking and saying let me see it let me look at it. The other one lifted her phone and some cash (about 6,000 Baht) out of her handbag. No violence, no screaming no kicking! They made it look like they were helping a sick friend. While all the time they were robbing her in broad daylight with hundreds if not thousands of people walking past They left the victim sitting there totally out of it, and just melted into the crowd. When she eventually regained her senses sometime later, still dazed and feeling sick, she could not believe it! All her stuff was missing including her shopping bags. She was still in shock when she staggered home. The boyfriend went ballistic and took her back to the market! But that was futile. All the people in the immediate area saw nothing! All the shop assistants saw nothing! Even the girl serving in the small restaurant saw nothing! A report was made to the police but that will also turn up nothing! At first, being my cynical self I had serious doubts about the whole story. I thought hello this is another one of those TG’s coming home with “Honey I have been robbed! Or “Honey a bad man on a motorbike take my telephone away”, or Honey the Buffalo ate my handbag! Can you buy me new one please….” That was until I had one of my Thai guys check it out with the local Pratunam police. Apparently this is a regular scam. The more seasoned Thai criminals pickpockets and the like, simply hang around these places like Eskimo’s at a watering hole and wait for the right fish to swim past. There were at least three reported cases in the last 6 months, in this (Pratunam market) area alone. God knows how many are unreported. The gang will now simply move on to the next location. They may never set foot here again because the victim was a Thai, and she may just go back there. If it were a tourist they would move away for a month or two and then return. I told the client that he was lucky they did not get her ID card (it was I her jeans pocket) or any information about her address or she could be targeted in the future. They would simply have someone hang around the place until her gold is replaced (she is off to buy more as we speak!) and then strike again, only this time she may get hurt. I am no doctor but I doubt if the initial drug on the cloth would not have the same speedy effect on a larger heavier person, with more body fat to absorb the drug. But I don’t know for sure. You all be careful out there, and tell your friends also. Watch out there’s a thief about! TPE II Under New Management
