I think when Chuwit first announced he was standing for Governor, everyone thought it was a bit of a joke. But now I have had 2 Thai guys tell me that he is probably favourite to win. This has got to be good news... Maybe we will get the zones with places staying open until 4.00am. I bet the 2.00am closing will move from 1.30am to 3.00am plus as in Phuket. I cant wait... when's the election?

Anyone able to decipher this cryptic article in the Nation this morning. The 4th placed candidate is obviously Bichit Rattakul.... and presumably the top three are Chuwit, Apirak and Pavena but I cant work out which is which. My best guess is it is (1) Apirak (2) Pavena (3) Chuwit... but it is only a vague guess.... (BTW the reason that 50% of voters are 'dont knows' is because they really 'dont care' and almost certainly wont vote) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- New leader but more undecided Published on Aug 17, 2004 The second-place candidate in past ThammasatNation polls has shot up to take the lead for the first time in the latest survey, while undecided votes surged drastically to nearly 50 per cent. The latest ThammasatNation poll indicates there has been a change in front runners after the former runnerup in four previous polls moved into first place with a 17 per cent support rating, leaving the former front runner in second with 12.9 per cent. But the latest poll results in no way indicate that any candidate is on top. That is because the number of undecided voters jumped to 49 per cent from 18 per cent. With nearly half of voters considering their options, the outcome of the race is still highly unpredictable. Under Thai election law, it is illegal to identify candidates in preelection polls. According to the poll, support for the former frontrunner from the first to the most recent poll has steadily declined, especially after the entry of many high profile latecomers. Meanwhile the former runnerup, now leading the poll, has gathered steam as more time passes. Moreover, the front runner in the latest poll won support in 27 districts of 50 capital districts, while the secondplace candidate led in 13 districts in the outskirts. The front runner has stolen support from the former front runner all over Bangkok including latter’s voter base districts. Highprofile latecomer and former fifthplace candidate moved into fourth place, receiving a nod from 4.5 per cent of respondents. The former fourthplaced candidate – now in fifth – received 4.4 per cent. The poll suggests the latecomer, now fourthplaced, gained votes at the expense of the former front runner. Both candidates have reportedly received backing from some factions of Thai Rak Thai. Also, the fourthplaced candidate gained votes from the former front runner’s supporters, who include vendors, housewives and labourers. The thirdplace candidate still had support from 7.5 per cent of respondents. The ThammasatNation poll was conducted on August 7 and 8, surveying 3,938 eligible voters in Bangkok’s 50 districts.

What an article. All you need is one of those horse race announcers reading it and it would be a riot.

If I was Thai, I would vote for Chalerm and his assistant sons. Choose 1, you get at least 4 weeding out the bad guys.... (and some good ones).

Guys, Looks like I have a business trip planned around early Sept for around 5 days (2-7 Sept). Does this clash with election and if so will the election have any impact on social scene in BKK, such as closing early or closing for voting... Appreciate any feedback. Thanks Snap

The election is on the 29th August - everywhere will be shut that day.... At the moment there is something of a crackdown going on (places are closing at 1.00am) and there is a general feeling that this is somehow linked to the election. After the election it is possible that closing times will return to 2.00am..... ....and if Chuwit wins maybe later... So if you arrive in September things will be no worse... and probably better than now....

It appears that the order of popularity in the Bangkok Governor elections runs like this. (1) Apirak (2) Pavena (3) Chalerm (4) Bichit (5) Chuwit So it appears that Chuwit stands no chance despite RTB's best efforts. Supposedly Apirak is getting a 'sympathy vote' because many people dont want the Democrat party to totally disappear. I guess Apirak is at least better than Pavena - she would probably shut the bars at 8.00pm if she got the chance.
