My brother his GF and one of his friends are all in wheelchairs. They will be coming to Thailand in December for a month. I am basically organising the trip. The problems I have.. 1. There are very few wheel chair accessible hotels 2. Places that say they are wheelchair accessible are often not (e.g. bathroom doors need to be 75cm wide so the wheelchair can get in) 3. There are no obvious online or offline resources for accessing quality information. Any useful websites, contacts etc. would be welcomed by me and I suspect other people. BTW the 2 hotels that are totally wheelchair accessible that I know are: Emporium Suites Dusit Polo Cha-am Finally I have managed to find a couple of travel agents that organise 'handicapped holidays' basically a group of handicap people travelling in a coach... this is not the sort of thing my brother is looking for.

Abrak, I would check with places like Sheraton Grande and Marriott. Usually US chains are more familiar and compliant for the needs of handicap.

Actually finding hotels isnt really so much of a problem... it is all the other things.... For instance, if he goes catfish fishing in Minburi is it wheelchair accessible (only real way to tell is for me to go and check it out first). It is. How about restaurants? Bed Supperclub? Not really but possible. The face - impossible. Sirocco - dunno but I guess impossible. This is one of the least wheelchair conscious countries in the world - kinda interesting how few Thais you see in wheelchairs. Obviously what I am hoping to find is an online resource or someone in a wheelchair who has been here or something like that.

sadly enough, I have to say that most disabled/handicapped Thai folk will stay in their home and be tended to by the rest of their family. I also never really noticed any wheelchairs in LOS until I went to the new Carrefour in Pattaya and there were a considerable amount of people in wheelchairs. It was designed for accesibility by wheelchair, but almost all the shopping centers are built without this consideration in mind. I did some searching on the web just now, but nothing really for LOS concerning wheelchair access, with the exception of Carrefour... You are on the right track though. Too bad it will entail all that footwork to actually physically visit every place you plan to take your relatives & friends. I hope they appreciate your efforts...

Phuket seems to be more wheelchair friendly than Bkk, just by the street access I noticed compared to Bkk. I also saw a guy one day in Emporium, he was in a chair and went to the escalator, instead of the lift, he grabbed hold of the rails and leaned back and away he went, people above him looked scared for him and asked if wanted help, he said no. You could tell he was as independant as one can be in a WC. By the way, dont take him to chatacuk market whatever you do, lol

I was in Siam Discovery tonight after a movie and a girl sat next to me outside while the missus was in a shop, shopping ! Anyway, I asked her if she knew of a website or travel agent or association that would have information for a wheelchair bound tourist. She said no, I asked if she knew any WC friendly hotels etc, she said hmmmmm, you might try the Sathorn area, around ChongNonsi cos the bts has an elevator there. So there ya go, hope that helped

Abrak The more expensive hotels, especially American chains like Marriott or Sheraton, are handicap-accessible for the most part. They almost always have facilities for the disabled, although I've never seen any in Thailand that meet U.S. ADA standards 100%. I am not in a wheelchair, but I use a 4-wheel walker & know that travelling as independently as possible is the best experience. I went to Bangkok, Pattaya & Chiangmai with few problems. In Bangkok, I liked the Sofitel Central because it is connected by a parking garage to a multi-story shopping mall w/bank, department store, supermarket, etc. In Pattaya & Chiangmai, the hotels had lobby-access ramps, and handrails in many places where they were useful, but not ADA standard. When outside any hotel, high curbs & uneven sidewalks are the norm. Hiring a good driver/guide for a day or longer is a good idea. I've found that there are many helpful people in Thailand and a smile goes a long way (speaking a little Thai or a small tip can be very useful, too!) I never expected full accessibility & there were always helpful staff or others nearby to assist. Get Travel/Medical insurance before your trip & ask & get answers to specific questions by email, if posiible, and be prepared for an adventure.
