Am a newbie who just got back from his 3rd trip to LOS. This time the post LOS depression has hit really hard. Its clear to me that an annual trip is no longer going to suffice.
Up until now I've always been able to conjure up a semi-credible reason for a visit to LOS. Do I continue the farce or should I "come out of the closet" so to speak with friends, family and colleagues.
How do/have other members handle/d this dilemma.

Friends - tell them the truth. Best way.
Family - tell them the truth. (Although you may not want to 'come out' to your doddering 90-year-old gran, in which case see below.)
Colleagues (who aren't friends) - tell them the truth, or nothing or lie through your teeth if you want, if they're not friends what do you owe them, all your secrets?

Good lies: the food (which is probably true anyway), a growing interest in Thai Buddhism, the culture, the beaches, the shopping...just make something up.

it's not just the feminazis in other countries
your female co-workers in LOS won't appreciate it either if they know what sort of a naughty boy you are
and if you tell just one male co-worker (or even hint), most likely they will ALL find out
Pick an older relative maybe, one who's been around, maybe ex-military, they've been here done that (or at least places like it), and let them know your contact details/location in case of emergency

My strategy is to tell stories which are close to the truth (destination/purpose that is) to anyone (friends, family, wife that is) and only the very few fellow mongerers amongst my friends and colleagues will get to know the real story.
I.e. I was on a scuba diving tour in Krabi/Thailand (muff diving tour in BKK and Phuket that is)
I.e. I did a sabbatical in Italy (yes, it’s plain truth, and hardly anybody knows that I had my black beauty with me (another story, she lives in Italy) and most of my hard work was with her, on her, under her, between her, somewhere next to her)
What makes this forum so important is the fact that most of us poor boys don’t have anyone to talk about their tough lives mongering …

If you have to lie to some people, you can say that you spend your holidays in a place where you've already been previously and try to stay informed about the weather and the main events that occurs in this place, just in case!
Of course, if you only have been in Scandinavia or Canada before (apart from Thailand), it might be more difficult to justify a darker skin when you come back from your vacations!!!
But that's OK if you only go out during nightime when you're in the LOS!!!

PS: You can also simply say that you have many friends here and that you are invited to stay in their home up country. No phone there, but you can keep contact with your important ones with internet via satellite... (exactly as it is in my little house in Northeastern Thailand!!!)

Lie: You never knopw when something will come back and bite you in the ass. Choose those who you want to tell. Many wont appreciate the truth, and may sometime use it against you.
Reasons to come over - Work, new project, sponsoring a family, learning the language, love the country so I go back, etc etc etc/
