Yeah, I know what you mean.

I got an unsolicited PM from a member the other day. I chose to ignore it rather than post it on the forum.

What do you think. Should I post the silly shit or just continue ignoring it?

I think all PMs should be kept private, no matter what the content. Just my opinion.

Personally I've never and don't ever, intend to "reveal" the PMs that I've received so far.

Ditto for me.

ExpatChuck, could it be from your friend Dotcom?

SHIAT is English (or more Scottish) slang of 'Shit' or something which is bad.

But what would Dotcom know.... if he thinks eight Americans were killed in the Middle East.

About posting PMs... it's your property so you can decide if you want to post it or not.

PMs IMHO, are personal messages i.e. sent to one person in particular, they're not secret messages or confidential messages so I s'pose it's up to the receiver to do what he likes with the message. Personally I've never and don't ever, intend to "reveal" the PMs that I've received so far.

Cheers
PS. I thought Scottish folk would have pronounced it SHITE. I've never heard any sweaty-socks saying SHIAT.

I'd have to agree with Brocher and CG in that regard - PMs are not just intended to be 'private', but it's generally approved netiquette to keep private communication, private, and not to 'publish' them.

Personally, I often felt that wanton violations of this simply rule of common sense and courtesy simply reflects badly on the ethical and moral compass of the violator.

I have never posted a PM and would hope I never have to.

The origin of this one caused the question from me.

I posted one once only because it had usefull info in it. I then edited out any info that would show who sent the PM to me but leaving the usefull parts of the message.

I sent a PM to the person to let them know I posted the message and removed any info that would reveal who sent it. It was justs some tech info I thought could be relevant but I still removed any info that would lead to who sent it. Unless I had permission to post it just seemed to be the correct way to do it.

Of course that PM was a helpful one and not some flame or insulting one to me, might feel different if it was the latter type don't know.

Think I would just ingnore it if it is an insulting flaming type.

Thanks, bimmher, you just pretty much provided the proper protocol for sharing and posting private information - in short, anonymize, get permission, and use to share information (not insults).

The big questions though becomes - if you know certain people are sharing PMs, does that make it fair game to share their PMs? In my book, no!

There's plenty of other means to share information, than having to violate trust. Of course, that's assuming those people are familiar with basic ethics.
