hi DG,
Man you were right about the Chiang Mai Plaza. What a place to bring a BG. Anyway I am here with my Thai wife. Last time we were in Chiang Mai we stayed at the Sheraton and it was nice but a little pricey and sterile.
After reading your bit on your escapades here I decided that we'd head up to it after BKK. BTW we usually stay at the Swiss Grottino in BKK but they were full so we stayed at their other property on Soi 18 the Town Lodge which is connected to Toxic. Very nice people and prices at the Lodge. A little Boutique hotel very friendly and 1200 bht per night less with the forum discount.
On to the Chiang Mai Plaza. Great staff room and wow what a lobby. All the Thais dressed up like a 1930's movie. My God the Tuk Tuk drivers here my wife tell them in Thai where we are going and they get all giddy and try to take us to all the goddam trinket factories... 
The Plaza is 1940bht/night if you go through the web to book. 2400bht if you don't this is for a Deluxe room Superior I think was 1550bht per night. My wife likes the room and the hotel is a better value than the Sheraton for sure. Of course there are cheaper deals to be had but the 'pop' of the place will simply overwhelm your average TG more than the Sheraton.
I explained to my wife after a couple of Tuk Tuk guys went goo goo on us that there were a couple of much nicer smaller hotels in Chiang Mai that cost way more and were nicer (by Farang standards) but the local Thais marvel at this place.
If I was single I bet that there isn't a Uni girl that I couldn't get laid with for free just by having here come for a drink in the lobby or even mentioning the place to her as DG said. BTW he had every detail down... you are cheecky one Mr. DG! I am really in awe of your skill.

Where did DG post the original you refer to? I would like to read it as I am always looking for interesting hotels, especially in CM. Stayed at what used to be the Westin, hated it, and the Lana Palace and got food poisoning from the breakfast.
