Bumped into this issue earlier this week in Paris. Was drinking in our usual pub with a couple of friends and the father of a guy with whom I'm dealing more and more. The father was half drunk already and asked me why I'd stayed so long in Thailand.
"Coz I got good and easy heads" was roughly the answer and he thought I was pulling his leg, avoiding the question. Couldn't really get why he was upset as he's been coming to LOS for well over 20years.
Was he too drunk or I really said something weird?? I realized he's been married for decades to a western girl his age and is a hippie mannered middle aged guy and he might not see a 39kg 19 y o fair skin thai bird tightening her fists while enduring assaults against nature whith the same paradise like light I see it...And there was that western fattie in the plane who mustn't come over mostly to lick young thai pussies... yet when I really think about it coming to BKK is a lot about easy sex and decent short term accomodation. Don't think living here several years changed it much.
What about you guys, is it the island, the somtam plaaraa or the silly economically challenged girls??

Excellent spearfihing just an hours flight away from a superb nightlife. I like spending some quiet time down south shooting fish and then spend a week in BKK in a drunken daze. Its so easy to accomodate numerous lifestyles in Thailand. Now if they would just start importing cheese doritos, thats my only complaint.

Just spent a few days in Singapore at a convention. The night times were spent at the Orchid Hotel comparing flos from Vietnam, Philipines, Chinese, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. I started with the Indonesian and Malay girls. There were an abundance of these types of girls. Next, I tried Filipino, then Vietnamese and finally Thai.
Although not the prettiest (the Vietnamese won hands down), the Thai girls were by far the most fun, loving and carefree of the bunch. It was the first time doing such a direct comparision. Now I know why my Singaporean friends flock to Thailand.

Check out any of the Villa markets for the dorito's, they are like 250 baht a bag (twice as much as the States) but I am with you, I would probably go even higher.

When friends come to visit thats all I ask them to bring. I found a small shop on Koh Phangan that had every flavor of Doritos plus Funyuns. I bought every bag they had. Malaysia has them in every 7-11.

why don't you take Thai airways from New York?I am not American but Philly is not very far from NY.
It is a 17 hours+ from NY.The service is great and the food too.A little bit more expensive but...

Sorry to speak for BidDUSA here but I feel it is the same for both of us.
1. ThaiAir is generally much more expensive than other carriers. Yes, it is a direct flight but I would rather fly longer and have the extra cash for "activities" in LOS.
2. ThaiAir is not affiliated with my frequent flier program of choice. I currently get almost 40k frequent flier points per trip now that I have elite status. So, every two trips is a free ticket to the Land of Smiles.

I get double frequent flyer miles with United. I pay for 2 and the 3rd one is free. Cheap Charley loves free plus I drink on the flight and fall asleep. I've flown Thai from JFK and I have to fly Philly to Washington and then up to JFK. Bit of travel time involved. Thai has better service and the FA are way better looking then the UA FA.

Why do I stick to the LOS? Because it has all the elements to make for a beautiful vacation.
The hotels are cheap as hell compared to many other destinations. The 5 star establishments are unbelievable. I like Phuket, so the island atmosphere is a real plus for me.
The food is incredible. No need to elaborate, mostly everyone is aware of that fact.
The massage culture of the land. Crazy cheap and crazy good. And I'm not talking about the sex. Here, no area of the body is neglected unlike back home.
Fourth - the infamous nightlife. Something for everyone.
One wish - the import of Aquafina or Deer Park water.
