What you need to do depends on how long you're staying in Thailand. Most Westerners get an automatic 30 day visa on arrival, and almost all the rest get at least 15 days. It's mostly African and Arab countries that must get a visa overseas before they arrive. So where are you from and how long are you staying? From there the answers can flow.

I think you may need to border-hop like almost everyone else. However, according to Frommers, you can extend your visa without having to cross any borders by going here to request the extension: Immigration Division of the Royal Thai Police Department 507 Soi Suan Phu (off Sathorn Tai Road) 2287-3101 A 30 day extension should cost about 500B. If you overstay your visa, you can expect to be charged 200B per day. If your penalty eventually reaches 20,000B you might be the next resident in the Thai immigration jail, so be careful. I'm from the States. Go to a thai consulate. I went to the one in N.Y. or you can through mail, apply for a tourist visa. A tourist visa gives you 60 days to stay in Thailand. Before the 60 days expire, run to a immigration office in Bangkok or wherever and apply for an extension. It gives you an extra 30 days. That's 3 months. After that it's the visa runs.

If he scores a 60-day toruist visa and nails the 30-day extension that covers half his trip. But does he really need to fall back on 30-day visa on arrival after that? Can't he just bop to Vientiane or Phnom Penh or Penang and score another 60-day tourist visa then extend that once? If that's possible it seems a little easier, just two half-days wasted getting the extensions plus two days in Cambodia for some novel fun while the paperwork gets pushed through.

Try sending your passport (with the required documents and fees) to a consulate, requesting a non immigrant O visa (multiple entry). IF they grant this you will get a visa that enables you to stay 3 months, without leaving the kingdom. If they don't grant it, then apply for a tourist 60 day visa.

also of course you get a 10 day extension for 500 baht just by going to the immigration office on soi Suan pluu - so that in effect makes the 30 day tourist entry visa last 40 days .... as to crossing the border, just a matter of walking over and back, no need to stay - closest is poipet/aranyaphrathet - about 4 hours from bangkok by Bus.
