As I understood it, if I want to stay in the LOS for a year or 2 years or 10 years, I thought I could. I thought the only requirement was that I have to leave and go to Laos or out of Thailand every 90 days then come back in the same day. I thought then I would be good for another 90.
Is this true?

Also I am from the US and am well under 50 but have plenty of money coming in as "disposable" money. (Over 3000.00 a month (Approx 125,000 THB))
I was under the impression that I could stay in LOS as long as I wanted if I had cash or cash flow. I don’t plan on living the 125,000 lifestyle, but I thought I need to show  cash flow.

I am not living in LOS now, I live in Washington D.C. but have plans within 12 months to begin my relocation. I also plan on coming home to the US every 6 months too.

Any Advice?
I have the money, location, living arrangements, etc. all researched or taken care of and I don’t need to work but I am having a bit of a problem understanding all this VISA BS. I have heard 90 days, 40 days, multiple entry, double entry, etc.

Please HELP a newbie out!!!!!!!!!!

TIA!
AL

whilst you can initially get a multiple entry Visa, which may allow you up to 90 days with stamps from the Bangkok immigration office, after that, you will need to cross to Laos/cambodia/Malasia etc. and can only get a 30 day tourist visa, which for 500 bt can be extended for 10 days, again at the bangkok immigration office ! Being thailand, there are ways, probably opening a non-working business would be the best, you can go 2 years without filing a profit return I think. Also, being here that long, and with that income, probably wont take a TG long to march you off to the alter 555 ! so that is another avenue .

Al,

Check out this link, not all is accurate but close enough.

Try to find out if you can apply for a non-imm visa in your country. You could extend that one here without making trips to the border. In that case you probably need a liquid bank account here in Thailand.

Good luck.

Hey, TPE, what's the Visa situation if you're married to a Thai national?

Awesome info thanks TPE.

So if I get a visa that allows me to work, open up a non working business, (understand that I will not be working...don't want to...don't need to...don't want to try and even earn 1 dollar... but if I do that, than I won't have to leave to visit Laos every 90 days?

Also assuming that I WILL be going home every 6 months, can I go get a new multiple entry Visa while in America that's good for another 90 days once I go back to LOS. Thus minimizing the trips to Laos or Malaysia?

About the TG getting me in front of the altar....No way in hell. Been there done that. Well maybe after 5 or 6 o r7 years.  I want to experience everything LOS has to offer before I get shackled to the ole ball and chain. But I will need to know how I can stay in the country for that amount of time first.

I have heard some real horror stories about guys Visa's expiring and going to some hell hole jail for a month, then getting kicked out of the country.

Thanks a heap for the help

Byron,

Yeah that's what I am talkin about. I had heard that if you could show cashflow from aywhere into a thai bank account, then you were under a different status and you may not have to make those Visa runs. I can show a significan't steady cashflow on a monthly basis.

I am still looking into it, I know you can get a retirement visa but you have to be over 50 years old. I have quite a long friggin time before that happens. Like 19 years. So I think THAT option is out if the question.

Al Ki,

It is not really a matter of showing cashflow but probably more a nice cushion in an account.

seubeu,

In case married to a Thai wife, it gets a lot easier. In this case you can apply on grounds of supporting a thai national. You need a statement from a local bank that certifies that you have I think about 2 or 300.000 Baht in the bank. Proof of marriage, obiously and some other docs. Not really complicated. Is this a good reason to get married, NO!

Cash-flow isn't enough to get you a visa.

The easiest solution takes 3 million baht. If you bring that from the US and put it in a government-owned bank (eg Krung Thai), then you can get your tourist visa turned into a non-immigrant visa; when that expires you can get a visa extension based on the same 3 million baht.  No need to set up a dummy companies or deal with work permits or anything else.  You can stay indefinitely without having to do visa runs.

I would strongly recommend http://visathailand.com  The guy who runs it really understands Thai immigration law.

Also keep in mind that the immigration laws are highly likely to change over time. While it may be 3 million now, it may be 6 million in 5 years (or they may drop this option completely) and you'll have to come up with another plan. Not to mention that it might take twice the amount of cash to support the same quality of life. It is a very dangerous choice to retire early to Thailand and you should have a big cushion to insulate you from future changes.
