Mr Alan
Did you contact Korean Air? you can upgrade on KE using Skypass miles, assuming they have availability.

Are you connecting to another Korean Air flight in Seoul?

i bought the ticket off of Delta's web site, but all of the flights are on Korean Airline...i don't have a skypass account, just a Delta SkyMiles account...but I thought I can use the miles from SkyMiles to upgrade on any SkyMiles alliane partner?.right?..

I'd call Delta directly, if you haven't. If you book it through Delta, it is their responsibility to upgrade, etc. As you know, you get a free layover in a city on the way there or back. I like Delta because of that.

I am flying Atlanta -Seoul-Bangkok in February. Delta has told me that yes, this is a code share flight but they get no upgrades with miles on Korean. I have tried and tried but with no luck and I've called both airlines hoping different rep, different results. They also will not let you book your seats until 24 hours before the flight. It will be a LONG flight but I'm going to Thailand. Your best option might have been San Fran to Tokyo and then only 30,000 skymiles on Delta for a ticket on Korean in Business Class to Bangkok. Of course this is through Seoul as well. You can use Delta skymiles to purchase a ticket in whatever class you choose but not upgrade using miles. At least thats what I've been told.

Mr Alan
I have flown Korean Air several times to BKK and just got the miles credited to my Delta Skymiles account. That is a lot better than trying to book on the code-share as a Delta flight, because the code-share will not have the same amount of inventory as the flight operator.

If you book with the flight operator, they can also be more accommodating in case you need to change anything (you don't have access to a Delta ticket agent in the Seoul or BKK airports or at the gates).

Thanks for the posts....i was also thinking of calling every few days to see maybe different agents will make a difference...I know for a fact on American this is the case...i ahve bought dep-discounted economy tckets and when I have called AA for upgrades using my miles, some agents say 'there is no way to upgrade the calss of ticket you have' while others did it right over the phone...my last chance is to call close to the departure date, as they may have some unfilled business-class seats...otherwise, this will e a long long flight!...i was trying to save a few miles...next time I will use miles to get the entire ticket, rather than use it for the upgrade....

My trips to BKK last years (from LAX) were on Korean Air but booked through Delta using my SkyMiles. Just keep in mind that every airline limits how many seats per flight they will set aside for upgrades or freebies. When they say it's not available, they may be telling the truth; the allocated number of seats may already have been used up. Not much consolation in this, I'm afraid, but it may at least explain it.

Yeah, upgrades can be a pain in the arse. I've had enough miles on Cathay to upgrade twice and each time I put in the requested dates for upgrade to business on the web site they are always unavailable and it's usually at least 6 months in advance. I always have to adjust my dates and even then it can be difficult to upgrade. Seems like it's not worth the trouble sometimes. If I'm forced to severly adjust my arrival/departure dates to upgrade then I'd rather fly economy and go when I want.
