I'm going to have a long vacation this year (little less than 8 weeks). As a US citizen, I can stay LOS for only 30 days without a VISA. I heard that I can visit a nearby country in 30 days and re-enter LOS if I want to stay LOS for more than 30 days without a VISA. However, in order to enter LOS without a VIsa, I must show them returing air ticket within 30 days. So I don't understand how people enter LOS without a VISA if they are planning to stay there for more than 30 days. Should I bother get a tourist visa? Or is there some trick to enter LOS if returning ticket is more than 30 days later?

I've never had to show any form of returning ticket no matter how long I have been entering for.

When you enter los, your passport gets stamped, you have thirty days, if you want to stay longer you can apply for an extention, I think for ten days at a price. If you want to stay longer it pays to go to say Cambodia, have a long weekend or longer then come back, same as before, when you arrive, new stamp and another 30 days. S05.

Go to your Thai embassy and get a 60 day tourist visa. That is over 8 weeks. You will have to show your air ticket and pay but it will work out cheaper and be easier than farting about going to Cambodia, etc.

It's real easy to get a 60 day visa from the Thai Embassy in the US. Go to the Embassy website down load the forms. Takes about 10 days to get your passport back.

Or buy a one year ticket, but have it marked that your exit is in 30 days to avoid problems. Simply change the dates free of charge in bangkok. The visa cost is 1000 baht at cambodia border, or 250 baht at Burma border (must show 10,000 baht) The law permits you to simply depart and return as long as your passport and ability to substain yourself is in order. The down side is every 30 days doing visa. To avoid the long drive to Cambodia, and back. I would fly north on oriental airlines at 330pm daily from Bangkok to Chang rai (its 1500 baht) Stay at a hotel (400 baht) have abit of fun. Then in the morning go to the bus terminal and go to MAI SAI on the thai border to BURMA ( 45 baht) Theres alot to see, (golden triangle) etc Big C has a great beer hall (all uni girls) The flight home is at 5pm and its 100 baht to airport in Tuk tuk Sure the CAMBODIA visa run in an aircon mini bus is 2500 only and about 7am til 4pm But this way about 5000 all up its only a few hours total travel and you play and see new sights. Once you do the Cambodia run you will consider more the P4p fly visa stop over. Anyone interested in great hotel value and exactly what to do, pm me.

I just realized that they never checked my return tickets in my previous 6 visits. I just didn't pay much attention since my longest trip was 3 weeks. However, it's stated in LA Thai Consulate General website that returning ticket must show the return date within 30 days. http://www.thai-la.net/visa/visa.htm#country I guess this law is not really practiced in Thailand. Kopycat made a good point. Airline could deny me if I don't have a valid VISA. Thanks for great detail dirty grue, but it seems less hassel and less cost to get 60 day tourist Visa than trying to visit other country in 30 days. BigDUSA, have you applied 60 days tourist VISA? I don't like the fact that I have to send them my passport to get 60 day tourist VISA but I guess I don't have any other choice. Thanks all.

What you say is true. (if your staying short time) ie 60 days or less. Goodluck. :: However those that want to "'hang around"' The one year ticket, and border crossing every month "'can be fun"" If its turned into an adventure north, and the trip from Chang Rai is taken (1500 baht flight Orinental airlines) And one hour by bus. You save 700 baht on the visa compared to Cambodia. Burma $5 US CAMBODIA 1000 baht. So its almost worth the hotel and planes just to escape the rig ma roll. Sure 60 day visa s are the go Unless you want to sample the place alot longer. Keep in mind 10,000 baht must be shown at the Mae sai crossing back into THAILAND from BURMA

joybkk, I've gotten four or five sixty day visa and never a problem. I send it regular mail and the Embassy has never asked for a plane ticket. BTW you get a 30 day visa when you arrive. Airlines in the US know the visa rules for each country as they are responsible for returning you on their nickel if your papers are not in order.
