No have not. I went myself so booked the flight myself and hired a private guide for a day. I got my hotel through the hotel I was staying at in PP to book it ahead for me. I went PP then to Ankor and back to BKK. Now after all that I will say this. In my hotel a guy asked me what I was paying as he was on a package deal. He was shocked how little I was paying and looked like he was figuring out where all the money went he spent for the tour. While in Ankor with my guide I was also asked by another couple how much I was paying for my private guide and drive. They were also surprised and said for the price they paid for thier package deal they could have saved money and had a private car and driver. They were in a mini bus getting taken all over the place like a bunch of cattle. So up to you what fits your needs the most but my guess is you can do it cheaper yourself and end up with a private tour where you can go at your own pace. bimmher

Bimmher, I'm thinking of visiting Angkor Wat next year. Your way seems a good one. Question: how did you find the private guide? Recommendation from the hotel in Cambodia? Friend? Travel Agency? Other? RIT

The taxi driver set up the private guide for me who picked me up from the airport. The taxi and hotel were setup by the hotel in PP. I walked out in the morning when my driver and guide was there with a girl in tow. They looked a little shocked for 1 second and said Oh 2 today? I said no just me and let the the No English cutie from Martinis who screwed me all night go He turned out not only to be a good guide but more then that (I guess walking out with the girl made no bones about the fact I was not just into Temples) After spending a day doing the temples he offered to show me the town that night. So he picked me up that night on his scooter and took me to some who knows where (you would never find it) local out door bar eating area all with locals. Cute girls in dresses who walked around always filling me beer. Yes he said they were good to go if they liked you. We then went and hit some of the bars where I picked up a little English GFE out of Zanibar (yes I know it is a dump). Always nice to mix the Temples of Ankor with the little brown temples of fun there I paid the drive 20 and guide 20 for about 5-6 hours and thought it was good value. You get to go at your own pace look at the temples you want and skip what you don't want. I forget what the flight costs (it costs me a little more). I went BKK to PP, then woke up to go to Ankor but decided to miss my flight instead of having to kick the girl out of bed at 8:30 am (I now don't take early flights), had to buy another ticket to Ankor then back to BKK. Buy your ticket in BKK not abroad. I don't really like package tours much anymore somehow they just don't seem to mix so well with my pussy hunting Sorry I lost the cards for the hotel and driver : ( bimmher

I did the same as bimmher. Stayed at the Mandalay Hotel (girl freindly) next to Zanzibar. Hired driver thru Hotel $20 all day (air conditioned camry). You want air conditioned car very hot clamboring thru temples. The temple guide thru Hotel $10, this prevents the kid guides from pestering you throughout the temples trying to make a buck. There are hundreds of temples spread out in an area about the size of New York City. I would reccomend 3 days to do it in an leisurely fashion (3 days 2 nites). At night driver took me to the P4P places and some of the Cambodian clubs. Tell the driver his tip is dependent on you not paying Taxi surcharge for girls! He is to assist you in getting a fair price. Air Fare BKK, Seim Reip, Phnom Phen, BKK last April about $300 US RT. Forget the organised tours. Morning Temples, Noon to 3pm lunch & beer, till sunset temples, night time pussy time. Now what idiot needs someone to organise that? 5555!

That sounds about right for air fair BKK, Phnom Phen, Seim Reip, BKK I think was $280 + $65 for the flight I missed Forget the tours I second CalEden. If you want to try and find the local bar my tour guide took me to. From the main road turn on to the one with Zanzibar (there is another bar just beside it forgot the name) and keep driving. Dirt road no lights and just little house's and stuff. After several blocks I really don't know how many you come to some outdoor restaurant bar. It also had karaoke. All was open but part was covered and part just on the grass with tables. The sign had no English but the food and beer were very good and very cheap. I lost that card also : ( Only thing was this cute girl comes around and filled my beer. She put ice in mine (I didn't mind as I was use to it). Another one comes around and took the ice out and filled my beer again. I think she told the cute one not to put ice in my beer. I think I was getting more ice put in and out of my glass then beer? I had gotten used to ice so next time the cute one came around I asked for ice so she did. Then the bitchy one who took the ice out did it again and balled out the cute one (she was yelling at her ) cute one said nothing but just sort of looked down. I was a bit So I told my guide to tell the bitchy one to go shove it, I had asked and wanted the ice!!! After that I never saw the bitchy one and the cute one kept serving me my beer with ice and smiling at me. I should have taken her but oh well. bimmher

I agree with Bimmher and CE 200%. Organised and pussy don't mix. I went totaly unorganised, but is that your thing????????? I think you should take ONLY 2 things in consideration. TIME and YOUR LUXURY NEED. Money is not what you should think of. As it boils down to being all the same price (more or less). Time : What is your scedule? Like Bimmher said you should take 3 days for the temples atleast. At a relaxed pace that means a 5 day trip. Day 1 and 5 for travel and hitting the town, day 2 - 4 hitting the temples and nightlife. Getting a guide local is no problem ask your hotel. No need for a AC car when you take a backseat biketaxi/guide. That is all the AC you need. But I learned that it is better to bring a skimask/goggles to Cambodia since you will get a whole new concept of the word DUST. I guess half of Cambodia went back home with me in the form of dust. Price : Is 10.000 Baht too much??? No I don't think so. Consider the following prices. The cheapest return flight from BKK is between 5.000 and 6.000 Baht. Hotel say $20 per night, Ankor Wat 3 day pass $60, guide + transportation + some food and drinks = say $20 per day. So you get very close to the 10.000 Baht. Difference is as I said TIME and LUXURY. Cheaper means more time and less luxury. Cheaper means also increasing your badluck. Anything is new to you, so you could get the short end of the stick every step of your way. Lousy hotel, lousy guide,... whatever. And only yourself to blame. Your choices, you pay for them. Tip for cheapcharlies : Book all your trips on Khaosan Road. They cater to backpackers and are between a 25% to 50% cheaper then a touroperator on Sukh. What did I do : I saw the 10.000+ Baht signs and got a heartattack. So walking around Khaosan Road a sign caught my eye. ANKOR WAT 300 BAHT!!!!! Now that was more like it. I booked it straight away. It was ofcourse only the bustrip to Siem Reap, but that was all I wanted. I would figure the next step out localy. The bus leaves 07.00 from Khaosan Road so that means getting up at 05.00 and leaving the hotel at 06.00, sofar the good (???) part. Taxi from Nana to Khaosan Road. And just my luck, it was the day of the BKK marathon. So with only 5 minutes to go and only halfway the busstop I was waiting in a taxi for 10.000 morons to walk by. Number 10.000 being a 99 year old guy with a zimmer and 2 nurses. Oh; what was I praying to my god Euthanasia. Since the pickup/ticket guy was at a relaxed pace I still had plenty of time, but I found that out in Khaosan Road. The long bus ride to the border was uneventful and as it should be. You walk across the border with your shit. That is about a mile so some of you will/can not make that. Then you will be packed in a few minivans with 15 people and luggage and you drive the next 150 miles in about 10 hours on non-existent roads. I never hope to have the need for an operation, as the surgeon would need 3 days just locating my organs. The word LUXURY got a lot more appealing to me that day. On the other hand you get to see something of the land and it makes a nice story. I ended up in a cheap hotel linked to the bustrip, that was a bit to cheap for my taste at $5. Only a fan and walls of only wallpaper. So I checked out the Bayon Guide and picked a hotel of the $10 - $15 price range. My driver Kim also linked with the Asphera Tours said "Why that hotel?" And me being very suspicious about his motives, said I like it so bring me there. Ok, no problem. So I ended up in a nice hotel only a 15 minute walk OUTSIDE the town. Kim turned out to be the best guide you could want. He never tried to sell me shit, bring me girls or nephews with shops. He only brought me on the last day to his uncle that lived ON lake Tonle Sap and I got a tour of the lake. Which I highly recommend. So he drove me from temple to temple at a minimal fee. And at night I picked an asshole with a bike for a 1-way trip to the nightlife. So nobody tried to mix business with pleasure, and I was happy about this. I booked a $25 boat trip to PP and left 3 days later by plane for BKK. Now this is not for everybody. But I'm not unhappy about my trip. I got what I payed for, I have only myself to blame and my freedom was worth the discomfort. So that leaves only one question. Is this your thing or not? And as the BG's say : UP TO YOU!

UP TO ME,, I will be seeing Angkor Wat with my son in January,,,,, flight OH yes,, no 15 hour buses on non existant roads for me,,,, organised tour,,no way,I like to mix my fun time/tourist time and late sleeping the way I want. Hotel, I will check recommendations ( mainly on this board) and pre book ( 800BHT per night should do the trick). Guide as suggested from hotel air-con camry fine for us ( no dust/heat / sun stroke to inhibit night mooves. I figure it can be done ( 4 days) for two at around 15,000 BHT including a nice hotel,,,2 rooms. Remember there is competition out there,, 999BHT will get you a flight to Phnom phen, nice boat trip down SO AVOIDING the monopolised 6,000BHT one way fair of BKK airways Notice how I quote in BHT,, so many twits quote dollars on here,, meaning those "green-backs" wish they would stop that,, dollars on BKK "tonight" are AUSTRALIAN Dollars,, if you want to quote American please join BKK "Tonite".
