Question for the veteran:
1. Where exactly is Issan when the TG mention they are from Issan?
2. Is Bangkok closer to Issan or Chiang Mai?
Reason: I had mention I wanted to go visit Chiang Mai and TG wanted to take me to go see Issan and her family. Says it is close to Chiang Mai. How close? I don't know that's why I'm asking. Also, if TG wants to take me to visit her family, should I be alarm?

Isarn basically means NE in Thai. I think I have that right. Walk East from Bangkok and you are in Isarn. All my visits to the family have been rather enjoyable. Many on this forum will tell you that most likely will not be the situation. My tg comes from a good family and fairly successful one for Isarn. Be prepared for a side of Thailand you will not soon forget.

Well, I'm tempted to go. I was born in that kinda of harsh reality 30 years ago. Born in Laos in a small village not far from Xiang Khouang. Just got done visiting my relatives in those remote part of civilized Laos and got along well. So, I kinda know what to expect. The one thing I wasn't expecting was being invited to go visit this TG family. Only had several hours flame with her but of coarse I treated her well.
I'm planning to come back to BKK next month and had mentioned wanting to visit Chiang Mai with her during our phone conversation. Then she added that she wanted to take me to go visit her family. What's the catch with this proposal from her? I can understand if we have seen each other on several occassions but just a one night and I'm already invited to go see her family. Am I missing something here or am I digging my own grave for accepting her invitation?
Any input is greatly appreciated.

Think of it as, when she visits her family by herself..she pays, and loses wages. If she can convince you to go with her...you pay....lol, no loss for her, and she gets to see the folks.

Well whether I pay or not has not been agreed upon. However, chances are I will be paying regardless if she offer or not. I understand she doesn't make that much and of coarse, there will be those days in which one misses their family very much. In those cases, one would love to go visit at a first chance they get.
Now what about those other bro when they take their TGF to visit her family. Do they pay or their TGF pay for the trip? I would think it is the same scenerio but correct me if I'm wrong.
What I'm trying to get is different perspectives about this trip so I can at least prepare for the worst or best... whatever the outcome is. Just expecting for the worst could ruin the trip when it actually turn out for the best. Expecting the best when it turn for the worest could leave a heart breaking experience. Just want to be open to any experiences that the brothers here on this forum have experiences in their past visit to the "family."

hhmmm... You mean the eastern coast is part of Isaan??
Don't think so and could imagine both my missus quite upset (one from Rayong, gone, and one from Chantaburi, soon gone I suspect) Isaan is north eastern Thailand, doesn't include the eastern seashore and it supplies pussy to the huge majority of foreign punters in thailand. No surprise the bird's coming from there.
My totally biaised but experienced advice would be: don't go to isaan, dump the bird, shop for a cuter northern model than have fun in Chiang mai with her.
