Was going diving in Phuket today. Caught a taxis at Suk Soi 19 and told the driver to go to the airport. Next thing you know he is heading in the opposite direction towards Nana. I was perplexed in that every taxis I ever took always head toward Asoke then Rama 9 to the new airport. I told him again that I was going to the new airport and he just ignored me basically, taking the highway towards nowhere. Anyway, I finally got worried and lucky he stopped at a toll booth at which point I got out and told the guy at the toll booth office to notified the police. I had to give the driver 100baht just so he would unload my bag from the trunk.

A van finally arrived and I took it to the airport. Of course, by this time it was too late to check in. BTW, the BangkokAir lady was totally apathetic. It was still 28 minutes till departure and I knew that I could have still boarded, since she had to call the main office to clear it. Of course they didn't so I missed the flight. Anyway, be careful of the crooked taxi drivers in Bangkok. Especially, when you are going to the airport. I have learned my lessons. Never take a taxi to the airport without writing down the license number of the taxis at the building security. Never use the crappy BangkokAir airline, they have the worst customer service.

I filed a report at the tourist police at the airport for a complaint against the driver. Who knows if it does any good. At least I feel better that I did something. Maybe it does no good, however I still wanted to report it so that they know. Man, I am seriously beginning to think that there is more anarchy here than before. At least before it was a democracy, now I don't know.

You just were unlucky.

I've taken many times a taxi from Petchburi to the airport. Usual don't even have to ask to turn on the meter.

Fare around 160 baht or so...

Taxi numbers are also inside the taxi. Usual on the doors (unless it's a unregistered taxi). You can also write down the license plate....

You are right, I was very unlucky today. I have taken the taxi to the airport over 100 times. Never had anything like this happen at all. I guess that is why I was so surprised and concerned. Not trying to read into this too much, however just want people to know that this kind of thing could happen. Usually taking the taxi is pretty safe in that most of the time you are on local streets. However, going to the airport you are traveling on the highway and if the driver choose to he could conceivably take you somewhere. In fact, I have read about this Bangkok taxi that robbed a swedish tourist. http://www.pattayamail.com/295/news.htm#hd1
Of course, I believe that most taxis are safe, however if the driver thinks you have some money, such as when you are going on a trip, you could have some issues.

Disagree - I have had nothing but good experiences, and excellent customer service from Bangkok Air whenever I used them. I found both their phone CS and in-person service ladies at the airport extremely helpful in many different cases, where we had various tricky requests or issues.

YMMV

Of course, each person's experience could differ. I just wonder if in Thailand they have a way to contact the police to report something? Similar to the 911 number that we could dial on our phone in the U.S.

seems right to me, from sukhumvit 19 you go down sukhumvit past nana to just past soi 1 and then get on the express way which is the bridge over the old soi 0 bars and then up to the airport, easier and quicker than asok/ rama 9.

To go to the Suvarnabhumi airport from Sukhumvit Soi 19 the best way is to go down Sukhumvit in direction of Sukhumvit 1 and there take the toll way which then goes to Rama IX. Then it goes to Srinakarin and then straight to the airport. It's the best way, believe me. Thru Asok or the other way down (Bangna) will take much longer, especially as there is work on the BTS line extension on higher Sukhumvit. You have not been cheated but overreacted out of not knowing it was/is the best for you.

I used to be very tense with cab drivers too, and I have a friend who would even pick a fight on almost every taxi cab trip, but if you take it easier you will find that these guys, if they put the meter, are not alwasy that bad. Out of 100 trips I must say that 98 % goes smooth

at least the policeman taking the report at airport would have enjoyed himself,

so mr farang sir, let me make sure i've got this straight, you want to file a complaint against a taxi driver for trying to take you to the airport by the fastest route possible and you have no idea who he is or the number of his taxi?

can't for the life of me think why the thais look down on foreigners.

Thais look down on foreigners?

It's true they hate overweight drunken pigs... but you might have the wrong general impression here...

If I go to the airport during the daytime on weekdays, from Soi 19, I will TELL the driver to go the way that the original poster was taken - on Sukhumvit towards Nana, then on the "highway to nowhere." But he will often want to go this way in the first place. The traffic on Asoke between Sukhumvit and Rama 9 is terrible most of the day on weekdays, taking Suk the opposite direction is usually MUCH faster (and a far more predictable time to the airport). The meter should be about the same, although the trip will cost 40 baht more because of the toll.

No airline at BKK airport has a policy of checking you in 28 minutes before departure, the flight is closed by that time. In this way they are all "crappy".

And if you fly Nok Air or Air Asia, and you try to check-in 28 minutes before departure, their contract of carriage reads that your ticket is worthless and your fare will not be refunded.
