Have a six hour lay-over (pun intended!) at the new airport. Anything of interest to do either within terminal or in close range of Suvarnabhumi - short of driving all the way into town at 5 pm on a Friday evening!?

You could have a massage but I am not sure if they will be as good as at the old airport

Maybe buy a lounge pass is as good as anything.

Otherwise have a look at the massage forums to see if massage is available nearby.

I got caught in an airport delay of 7 hours in Pittsburg one year. After thinking about it a bit, I walked in to the bookstore and bought Ben Bradley's A Good Life and read it. I finished it just before boarding the plane.
Don't know if any books are available at S airport but there are likely lots of magazines in English.

I like the massage idea too.

more than enough time to hit Colonze II on Rama 9 road, the motorway takes you straight there from the airport, 30 minutes in a taxi max, then snuggle up for a 2 hr session, and grab a taxi back, all well within the 6 hrs.

SECON Square is a large mall about 20 min away on Srinakaran Road. Nice to walk around and see all the gals walking around and working there..It's a really huge mall..Asia books has a branch there...and after you get your book walk around the area as there are massage places near by...

Yes best to leave per some suggestions above. Keep in mind, once you leave and go through immigration you will have to pay a departure tax. I still think it is 500THB, but if you stay in the airport terminal most lilely will be reading about another farang who jumped to his demise. That is why they made the airport control tower so tall.

@loco 1 > I wouldn't suggest just going to Seacon Square and wondering around the area looking for MP's, Poor old Wagie would go nuts !! The closest one is Kings Park and thats opposite Seacon down a side road, and not viewable from the road or Seacon. The other options are Jarin, J-One and the one next to the Thai Home place, the closest of which is a good 15 minute walk away from Seacon ! In addition all of these places are older, less comfortable, not as clean and cost the same as places like Tulips, so only to be used as a last resort. Catherines, La Defense and Colonze are the way to go.
Of course, with 6hrs at 5pm, theres even enough time to get down to Cowboy or Beer Garden soi 7 and partake in some services, but you would be clock watching if your not familiar with Bangkok.

@ThaidUp > could be wrong, but I was under the impression that if you were on a transit stop over of less than 24hrs, you can collect a 'card/badge' thing that you use to re-enter and avoid departure tax. Apparently you collect it before exiting the arrivals hall.

Thanks all! Well, the 6-hr layover has come and gone and killed the time inside the transit area, the TG lounge and even a 30-min back massage free of charge offered to lounge users...

I know BKK very well, and I certainly know better than to have ventured into Suk traffic at 6 pm on a Friday night with a deadline to be back at Airport by 9h30 pm or so!

As for airport tax, ThaidUp, since change to the new airport, tax was raised to 700 THB and is charged directly on your ticket as for most other airport taxes worldwide. No more of the little tax counters just before immigration as at Don Muang.

Another fine example of prompt advice to help another BTFer.

Yes I am aware of the tax being on the ticket now and I was also aware of an irate Arab yelling at a Thai Air Customers Service woman on a 15 minute tirad to avoid paying the airport tax for only coming through immigration and looking around. I was the happy receipt to get said customer service rep next.

I am unaware of the 'card/badge' process. Is this like a Transit plastic card? and will it work if you enter Thailand through immigration then return within 24hrs?
