Dude, if you're going to be driving those kind of distances, rent a car - usually 1,000 baht a day, if your rent the car for a full week or more.

Think about it - much more fun if you drive yourself, and you are bound to discover plenty of places you never would have known about on the way.
On the way to Hua Hin, we discovered plenty of little (and big) places - like totally irrationally placed Outlet stores, in the middle of nowhere; or an awesome snack outlet, huge, with some tasty looking treats (albeit finding most covered with flies made me hold off on the purchase, oddly) ;
Most of all, we discovered little towns before we hit Hua Hin that had far nicer beaches than we found in Hua Hin (stay a night in Cha Am, enjoy the beach).
When in Hua Hin, stay at Buffalo Bill's rooftop guest house - about 2,000 baht a night, but the singularly best views. If there's a couple of you, rent both of the rooftop apartments, and enjoy the shared patio and a little bit of paradise (and Bill's cooking in the pub is amazing!)
Pack a TG that shares your sense of adventure, rent the car in Bangkok - I rented from Sawasdee Rent a Car -- 02-6616505. They are right around the corner from Soi Cowboy. They advertise the week for 8,000 Baht, but you can negotiate down to 7,000 Baht. Plus, you can use the extra 1,000 baht for full coverage insurance (well recommended). Live the adventure!

Simply wonderful ! It is a pretty safe country, driving is what I like to try always in a new country. I remember,Without knowing the city Toronto, I drove there all 5 days and alone. On those days mobile phone was not handy at all.So, rent a car is a fantastic idea, thanks. Looks like to me, you perhaps tell me where I can by cheap gas asvwell....ha...ha...

Gas stations are everywhere on all major streets, and highways, just make sure what the car uses. Some use LPG (liquid petrolium gas), and others use gasoline. LPG is better, and cheaper in the long run. Not all stations have both, so watch the signs, and find out what the car uses if you rent one without a driver.
Once you get out of Bangkok driving isn't too bad, but in Bangkok is not even close to driving in Toronto...lolol. Get a very good map because not all signs are in English. Most are, but not all, so you might get lost a few times if you drive yourself.

If you see the map of Thailand, you will see that Hua hin and Koh Chang is just across the sea/gulf of Thailand. But you cannot cross it, no sea transport available there.

I had a very bad experience at the car rental here...
Yes, rent a car and drive is better experience. Garmin GPS has Thailand map. Most people have smartphone nowaday. You can use your phone as a gps device.
Also, you can take shuttle bus (passenger van) at Victory Monument BTS for very cheap price. It's cheap if your hotel is along the way. Then you can ask the driver to drop you off and then pick you back (ask the hotel to call for you to reserve a seat) to Bangkok.
