To check availability and book online, click here. Note that if you book an e-ticket you cannot then change that booking online; you must call them or visit a ticket office or travel agent. Bangkok Airways also has several daily flights to Phuket, so it's usually possible to find something even in peak season if you're flexible. But it will save hassle to book ahead.

I am going out early to the airport tomorrow a.m. to standby and will let you know how I make out. I have a 1700 hrs. flight booked but would like to get an earlier one. Usually I have a booking at this time of year but had to change my plans at the last minute.
One Thai official told me that if there is a whole raft of stanbdbys (100 plus) the airline will usually rustle up an extra aircraft as a lack of available seats could impact the tourist industry..
