lockheed 1011,

thanks for the comprehensive report.

just a couple of q's:

"The fare from BKK to SIN is as low as Baht 499 one way. This can increase to about Baht 2,700 depending on the date and time of travel and the loading."

Q1. How does one know what is the right time to book to get the lowest fare? Is it predictable or is it just a matter of luck? I'll be booking sin-bkk-sin though.

Q2. I am reluctant to check in bags and usually travel with hand baggage. Do they allow this?

Cheers!

The only way to check fares is to go to the website - it is a good site - enter the ruote you want to fly and the dates. The site offers you available flights for that day and the day before and after. The fares can differ significantly. AA fly BKK to SIN twice daily.

You wont get Baht 499 to SIN anymore. Cheapest is now 1,300. Remember like all airline fares this is b4 taxes.

Cheapest fares are midweek. Weekends and holidays are more expensive.

They only allow a small amount of hand baggage - it is only a 737-300. I think the hand baggage allowance is 7kg.

Checking in your bags is no big deal - not these days. Only the utterly paranoid would worry about losing bags !!!

AA will start flying BKK to HKG, HCM, Haikou, Manila, and Penang later in the summer. Expect big discout fares when these new routes are launched.

I am flying with AA later today - one night in SIN - Baht 499 there and another Baht 499 back. The taxes will be more than the fares!

If you are feeling adventurous they have just started flying from Malaysia to Indonesia as well.

Good news for the consumer - and a bit of a wake up call to the major carriers.

Look out for Valuair - coming in May (maybe June) from Singapore. Expect one of their first routes to be to BKK.

Hope that helps!

lockheed, i've watched a few programmes where these budget airline ceos are being interviewed and I've yet to hear an interviewer ask them about safety. Call me paranoid, I cant help but wonder:

To offer cheap flights you can remove all the frills of flying. That works.

But surely, one cannot opt for a lower, cheaper level of maintenance of aircraft. Do these guys still pay for maintenance like the big carriers, you think, or do they have their own cut price version?

Is it valid to ask the question if these kind of flights will always be safe for the traveller or is this low cost everything just a disaster waiting to happen?

thanks.

when I checked 2 weeks ago, I could only get the cheap rate for flights in may.

but it is still great because you more or less know your dates in advance.

one way is 499.00, tax is a total for nearly 1'100.00,
so for 2'000 plus baht, you can go to singapore and back.

looking forward to the hong kong service.

The Thai domestic carrier, "Nok", should also come online soon.

Vancouver Jay,

My flight reports simply do not match your field reports !

My take on maintenance and safety.

1. If a low cost carrier has an accident they are out of business. Ergo - they are almost more cautious.

2. They only have one type of plane to maintain and one type of engine. It is a much simpler process than keeping say Thai's fleet in the air (they have maybe the worst fleet flying in terms of complexity of maintenance).

3. The LCC model is well established. The big guys in the USA - Jetblue and Southwest and in Europe, Ryanair and Easyjet all enjoy the best safety records. It is not so much that these guys cut corners. Is just that they are not fat bloated union shops like the estbalished carriers.

4. Safety standards are regulated and tested by each country's aviation authorities and by the manufacturers.

5. There is downtime each night for regulare maintenance and a specific programme of heavy maintenance.

6. There are plenty of pilots - many of whom enjoy this type of flying - 1 to 2 hour hops and home to the family at night. Not everyone wants 14 hour non stops - acute jetlag and another hotel room ! For many this is real flying !

As to Nokair - personally I am not convinced that we will see them. Whatever happened to Pacific Thai. Nokair is Thai getting better use out of some of their 737-400s and trying to compete with the new entrants. But they are totally dependent on Thai for crews, equipment, maintenance - and big subsidies !!! And launching Nokair in the middle of the Bird Flu (or was that Bird FLEW) crisis was a PR joke.

Look at the recruitment page on Nokair's english website - they are recruiting flight attendants who are "energetic and living." (sic).

The point here is that Air Asia give every impression of being a highly profesion outfit. Nokair is a shambles by comparison.

I have seen reports that 1-2-Go will start Bkk to Phuket shortly. But with these guys it is hard to tell what is going on.

As for BKK Airways. They are good to look at - planes and crew. But Baht 7,000 ++ return to Ko Samui (which is halfway to Singapore) is too expensive - or for Mr Holmes Jnr many s.t.'s and more than a few beers.

There is no Valuair website yet. And no site for Tiger Airways. Watch this space.

Have fun !
