Cannot verify that airlines are required to repatriate older or for that matter anybody who has passed on while in the land of silk'n thighs. However I do know all of the airlines offer bereavment fares to people returning for funerals, not sure that would apply to famlies trying to get a body home. Interesting question, hope I do not find out the answer any time soon

Hin, The transport of bodies is not free; if a next of kin who is willing to pay for the shipment is not found, the body is cremated in LOS.

My uncle died in S.Africa (while on vacation there) and although I don't remember how much it cost to get his body brought back here I do know it was veryyyyy expensive. I didn't beleive at first how expensive. I thought it would be something like excess baggage charges.. you know... $X per kilo or something like that... but nope, it was VERY expensive!

Yes, even though you'd like to think your uncle was more highly valued, it would be one respect in which perhaps you wouldn't mind if the airlines just considered him as regular cargo.

My employer has an insurance policy on our employees that covers medical transportation to a hospital if we are more than 100 miles from home. Included in this policy is "transportation of mortal remains". I checked and it covers me even if I am in a foreign country. On my last trip to BKK, I told my daughter about this insurance and I made sure that I read it exactly as printed: "transportation of mortal remains". She did not want to hear that. I thought it was humerous.

oh geez MrJoe... I just had this vison of my uncles coffin spinning around on the baggage reclaim carrousel with KLM stickers and barcodes all over it. That's not what I meant. lol. (god forgive me for laughing). I just thought it would be cheaper than it was. Like I took my mountain bike with me on one flight.... and that got special treatment... but still only cost me so much per kilo. I really shouldn't comment on "delicate" matters... I'm about as subtle and delicate as a kick up the ass.

Mr Joe Thanks for the clarification, also to X for the costs involved. I find it difficult to believe that the airlines would charge extra to get mortal remains home. That is unconsionable if you ask me. Of course I guess they have you at a disadvantage at a time like that. Terrible really

Hi x I fly my machines around the world. They are about the size of 3 coffins. Including paperwork the cost is about 700 GBP from UK to say Hong Kong. Did your uncle fly "business class" I hope this post doesn't offend Dave

X, Don't blame yourself for your great sense of humor or your indelicacy; I personally feel that we tiptoe too much around death, considering it's such an inevitable and universal part of life. Certainly it is often accompanied with sorrow commensurate with the loss suffered, but as soon as we can find some humor in it, the better IMO. I say all this in preface to the confession that I chuckled at your post and the image described . (No disrespect intended to your uncle or his memory, of course.)

No Dave your question certainly doesn't offend me.... and that is actually the point I was trying to make. I would have thought that the repatriation of remains by an airline would if anything, be cheaper than regular cargo or at the very least similarly priced. I know my aunt well enough to know what ever options she was given, she would have chosen the cheapest one. I doubt very much she would have lied over the costs... but that is a possibilty. (incidentally the same airline on the same route [S.A -> N.L] bent over backwards to help her [no extra charge either] when my grandad died suddenly and they had to get back home quick. Again... I can't remember what the costs were.. but MUCH more than you quoted for 'regular' cargo. It was literally thousands of pounds.
