Last week TG911 outbound from Heathrow
Saturday's TG916 inbound Heathrow.
Both painted up in Star Alliance(boring!) colours !
A small Thai logo on the fuselage and this daft five
pointed pyramidal star and giant 'Star Alliance' painted
along my favourite mauve orchid and white aeroplane.
I hope they don't tamper with the uniforms,in flight service and anything else ?

Anything else? Heh-heh-heh...

The airplane you flew in carries the Thai registry code HS-TGW and is called Visuthakasatriya. It's a Boeing 747-4D7 c/n 27724 powered by CF6-80C2-B1F engines.

First flown on 19-Apr-97 and delivered to Thai Airways on 28-Apr-97 at Don Muang. Seats pax 14F/50C/325Y = 389.

The previous Thai Airways airframe carrying the Star Alliance colors, an Airbus A300 HS-TAO, was subequently reverted to the standard TG livery.

Yurune-
I have had some contact with the flying(bloke at the sharp end) and the engineering side through my Royal Aeronautical Society connections. These are professionals. No question about it. But the 'service' end and the management? I incurred the wrath of many of their management at a lecture by their boss Rod Eddington. Question time at the end of the lecture..I made the point that a few years back I met Sir Freddie Laker and he ran his airline for quite a few years from the back of his hangar. How does BA justify the cost of an admin centre(called 'Waterside'-fountains and trees inside the building) the size of a small village, when the whole operation is in effect financed by the cost of a ticket.?.. i.e too much management ! I nearly got lynched !
I have a mate who works for them and hates it. The operation is still run even after privatisation like a civil service department. Although the previous chairman is named Lord King. "The customer is King" does not enter their vocabulary. This used to be very much a British thing but from what I understand the US(Airlines) are not a great deal better? I know quite a few people who will not fly BA on principle. Not surprising with some stewardesses with the "Here come the bloody passengers" and using the 'Royal We' whenever they can. I don't think it is the staff that's the problem as much as the management 'culture' within the airline. Could you imagine 'Singapore Girl' hiding behind a curtain doing her nails trying to avoid thirsty and hungry passengers because really they are an inconvenience to her life style. Whether or not the words 'Service' or 'The Customer is King' is ever drilled into them I could not say but it never seems to hit the spot. Many of the stewards are of the 'gay' persuasion and chosen because of it, as 'they' seem to be quite good at 'service' of the beverage kind. I expect there are some excellent stewards/stewardesses within BA but like any individual they are swamped by the sytem and in the end give up.
Fly is flying, long hours and dehydration, alcohol does not help. Same old films and 'average' food. Where's the Egon Ronay of the air ???
Somehow the Asian airlines have got it as good as it can be. That might very well be a cultural thing?
Although as I said ealier I had a good experience with SAS.

With regard to the original question. A couple of years back I went to a lecture by Lord Marshall(Colin Marshall) the current Chairman. He talked a lot about 'Globalisation' and mega airlines. i.e Star Allinace, One World,Sky Team etc etc. The engineers and pilots present(past, present and future) were not really sure what he was on about. I thought I knew. I asked him how with mega carrier groupings, service and good ticket price could be maintained?(big is difficult to manage)He 'Globally' waffled....... It is the way things are going and whether or not the airlines will keep their identities remains to be seen. How much this is based on costs I couldn't say but sadly the demise of my beloved Concorde is based on this. Before the crash it used to occasionally shed a bit of rudder(don't panic it's OK). Then after the crash the fuel tanks and a few other things were modified(belt and braces approach!). Then after spending money on that Airbus(Aerospatiale) issued a mandatory instruction about a rebuild on the rudder to stop the 'incidents'. This was quite major and would cost quite a bit. Concorde became uneconomic and the most elegant beautiful bird will soon be an exhibit in a museum(the French ones are already).
Pity but that is 'Costs'

I am just about to start a book about the low cost airlines and why they are successful. The comparison should prove interesting?

VJ = Superspotter !

You must have a copy of World Airliner Directory !

Meet you at Don Muang for a spotting session?

When I was there in may there was a cargo IL-18 and IL-76 there. Ace !

The Royal Thai AirForce museum is worth a visit if you have not already been?

Anorak, heh-heh-heh. I actually knew what that meant in context without looking it up. But, no, I'm not a 'spotter of any stripe. I just got interested in the histories of all the TG equipment I've flown over the years (not a pun!) and found the websites to scratch the itch.

BTW, aren't the Royal Barge paint schemes fetching?

VJ-
I don't collect any registrations but I still love to look at planes....its in the blood! That IL-18 was owned by Phoenix by the way. Some Kazakstan or wherever cargo outfit. Thongs made in Thailand are popular?

"BTW, aren't the Royal Barge paint schemes fetching?"

Yes I think they look great. I can't remember if one or two B747-400's are painted in that scheme.

I wish they would 'fetch' me back to BKK !!!

If I have another option I won't use BA....the same goes for airlines from the US....my worst flying experiences were with pan Am and TWA.....good riddance. I've never flown AA but I've heard good tnigs. Best US airline I ever flew was South West based in phoenix....very pleasant.

I have to say thou it hurts me much that i have found BA to be very good on the Bangkok to Sydney run.
Individual computer screens, comfortable seats more leg room than Thai and many others and very happy to give as much booze as you wanted.
Qantas are indeed a poorer option as is Thai on the same run.
