Not sure if Duty Free booze prices are any better for departure, but they certainly won't be any worse than what you would have paid from your destination.
The only Duty Free shopping I've done at Don Muang was to purchase a box of Cuban Monticristo cigars. I had been up all night and was very disoriented for an early departure. I handed my US Passport, and the staff looked at me very strangely and asked if I really wanted to buy these (actually was committing a very serious offense, trading with an enemy of the US government, potentially a few years in the slammer).
Checked my receipt later and they had listed my Nationality as "Europe" and changed two digits on my passport number. Many thanks for protecting a foolish farang from his uncontrollable indulgences. I'm sure the Thai's are used to doing that.

As little as possible. I find that you can buy knock off shirts etc, and agree that socks and boxers you should take with you. The only thing I ake sure I do take is 20mg of valuum for the flight! Once I drop those and a glass of wine, I am asleep for 11 hours.

Saw a clever sign at don Maung which if true could be a winner it had the price of whisky at heathrow against the price of whisky at don maung
as to the original post a Multi mains adapter for all those electronic goodies I buy when in thailand
and some good books to read as new papperbacks are quite expensive I usually buy three books
1) page turner thriller type for the plane
2) some clasic book I never got to read when I was at school
3) some factual book i.e histrocal / biography type book
