This all depends on what Country you are from. Singaporeans get a Visa on arrival with no problem, don't even have to stand in a special line. It is probably similar for other Asian neighbours!

Another thing you should be VERY aware of,,,,,,
you need POLICE permission to leave a city ( yep ommunism at it's nest). I was in Saigon and decided to go with friends to a very small town down south on the Mekong called "Bein Tre" on arrival after settling in my dirt floored bamboo hut I was asked to visit the local policeman to "register" ??? WTF ?? ok when in Rome.
After meeting the policeman I was asked to show the Police documents giving me permission to leave HCMC.
Luckily the policeman had a penchant for Foreign cigarettes and two packets fixed the problem but he explained I was NOT covered by his protection and I must leave by the floowing evening.
Once again don't know if things have changed but that was in 2002

I think that requirement to register when you leave HCMC has died a much needed death. Was in VN last month for several weeks, and had unfettered and unrestricted access throughout the country. With their big new push for tourists, I guess they figured it was high time to drop the Chi-comm controls.

The post tudobem made on the first page of this thread is current and correct. You can drop your passport off at the Vietnam embassy (5 minutes walk from Chitlom BTS on Wireless Rd) and pick it up the next afternoon with the visa. You need to complete the form and give them one picture.
You cannot enter Vietnam BEFORE the entry date on your visa. After is OK, but there is also a date you need to leave by.
When I checked in for the Thailand-Vietnam flight, I was asked to show my return reservation Vietnam-Thailand. When I checked in for the Vietnam-Thailand flight, I was asked for my "departure from Thailand" flight details.
Thai passport holders do not need to obtain a visa in advance. The girl (I call her 'Snow') I took to Hanoi then Halong Bay was thrilled to go outside Thailand for the first time, and showed me her appreciation throughout the trip.  Perhaps a FR is in order.
