Drove to EVERY f_cking hotel until Finally f_cking dropping me at Walking Street. Never again, no way.

I've been to Pattaya loads of times, and prefer it to Bangkok. The easiest way is by arranging a Pattaya travel agent or your hotel to arrange your pick up at the airport, you'll be met by your driver with your name on a card, (I always like that). However Bangkok is certainly worth staying in for a night or two, so I would reccomend staying in a hotel for a night in Bangkok, and then use the hotels travel rep to sort your journey to pattaya, probably not the cheapest option but very much hassle free, what I wouldn't do is use the limo service agents who pounce on you as you move into arrivals - some of their drivers are real wankers, after you've payed about 2k to the agent, the driver will ask for toll money, hassle you to pick you up for your return to the airport and then demand a tip!

You can get the Skytrain to near Ekkamai bus station then pay 90baht at the booking office for a reserved seat on the air conditioned bus, makes just one stop near to North pattaya but very good service. I didn't realise it was reserved seat, just parked my arse down on a seat and then caused chaos having to move to front of bus whilst everyone else was getting on!

Is it safe to flag down a normal taxi in BKK for a trip to Pattaya?

You can certainly flag down a taxi to do the return trip (Pattaya -> BKK). Just look for an empty Bangkok taxi (usually you can find some on Pattaya 2nd road). There are quite a few taxi "offices" on 2nd road between soi 7 and soi 8, advertising "Taxi to BKK: 800 Baht". If you ask for a taxi from any of these people, all they do is flag down a Bangkok taxi themselves, give the driver 500 Baht to take you to BKK, & keep 300 Baht profit for themselves. For doing nothing! The driver is going to BKK anyway, so for him 500 Baht is better than nothing. I did this a couple of weeks ago. Interestingly, the driver left the meter on for the entire trip (he promised to ignore it once we got to BKK) to see what it would cost by-meter. Was about 830 Baht.
