I'll try suggested travel agent and web sites once I get vacation approval from my manager in 2-3 weeks.

Try Yahoo best fares, they always seem to turn up something cheaper than the other sites.
Play with the return date a little bit and you might find the price dropping a couple hundred dollars too.

Another thing you can try is the ITA engine (free) :
http://matrix.itasoftware.com/cvg/dispatch/prego
It will look at inventory of almost every connection combination, something many of the other search engines do not. I am partial to the above ITA engine, as I had "involvement" in some of it.
The coolest part is the "Month-long search" option.
You can't book from this engine, but you should be able to provide a good travel agent the flights and fare codes, all this engine is doing is finding fares that the computers are storing as available. It's value is that it prices hundreds of flight and fare combinations.
For Dec, I found in the $900s from LAX and in January, it goes to below $700. Poke around here and see, if you like it, think of the brilliant programming team that designed and created this.

One thing I've never really seen/found is an engine that can effectively give me pricing involving roundtrips involving multiple airports.
For example:
LAX --> BKK --> VIE --> LAX
Also, seriously cool piece of software, that ITA search, but how come it doesn't include other carriers like Cathay Pacific and Swiss?

hzink, you can dictate stops, airlines, connection locations, etc. using ITA route language. Look at the "The ITA Route Language " page on the help screen.
It includes every airline with fares in Sabre, Apollo and a few others. I just entered SFO-HKG and got Cathay, and NYC-ZRH and got Swiss.

Just bought NWA ticket from SFO to BKK for $778 around Christmas.
This deal looks so good that I just grabbed this ticket without checking other travel agent suggested above.
I'll definitely try other travel agent next time.

joybkk Congrats on that; I think that is a good price given holiday travel period. Make sure you register for NW's frequent flyer program if you have not aleady done so.
The ITA software is excellent, sorry I forgot to include that in my post. Too many things to keep track of.

One other option on peak holiday times is to find someone who has tons of mileage (enough for a free ticket) and make a deal with them for them for a ticket. Ahem, I wonder who that would be?!
Amazingly, there are usually seats open on SOME flights for mileage even in peak season - if you are a little flexible on travel days and whether you travel in coach or business.
