"Gulf Air has ABSOLUTELY NO regard for their absurd levels of bumping and offers nothing more than a hotel room when they do destroy your vacation - through inability to reestablish connections in a busy season."

If you think they are disorganised with the passengers....you want to see how they manage to destroy the crew schedules. Its a joke...last week I was supposed to go to Delhi.....I ended up in Heathrow instead. Shortage of crew due to Ramadan.

As for Arab Children running around....well they bounce well when you hit turbulance, and forget to put the seatbelt sign on!

Have never flown Gulf Air so cannot comment, as far as bumping goes it’s a bad practice particularly as most budget tickets are not flexible so you can not change your flight, cancel and get your money back.
also if you miss your flight you loose your money yet they can bump you at will, certainly an unfair practice.

Though I have never been bumped, (it pays to check-in early), I was more than a little upset with Emirates earlier this year as I had booked an evening flight from my local airport, a few weeks after booking the flight I received a call from Emirates to say they had cancelled the evening flight and would I like to take the earlier midday flight or the midday flight the next day, after considering the options, I elected to fly earlier the same day as a result I had to book an extra day off work and therefore my next trip to LOS will be a day shorter.

I was disappointed that there was no compensation as it was clearly an operation decision to cancel the evening flight service from Birmingham even before it had started, there was a lot of press coverage that had preceded the intended launch of this service, funny that there were no press releases to say that they had changed there minds about the second daily flight from Birmingham, even so, Emirates is still my favourite Airline.

Sorry for the second posting but I felt this issue should be kept separate to the last…

Is Gulf Air a dry airline???

The point is a few years ago I had the misfortune to fly with Kuwait airlines and was not warned that it was dry airline, now I am not a big drinker but I do enjoy a few drinks on long flights as it helps me relax.

The flight in question started at Heathrow, I checked in and went to departure lounge via security and waited for my flight to be called passing the time looking round the duty free shops, even contemplating purchasing a bottle of whisky to take out with me, fortunately I did not purchase, eventually my flight was called and off I went to the departure gate, up until this time events had been normal.

On entering the departure gate (a enclosed area for holding passengers before boarding) I was confronted by a row of tables where passenger’s hand luggage was searched and then all were frisked relieving the unfortunates of alcoholic duty free & concealed hip flasks, obviously the flight, the four hour stopover in Kuwait and connecting flight was dry.

The return was pretty much the same, only the search took place in the passageway between the gate waiting area and the plane, out of sight of the Thai authorities, the stopover in Kuwait was even worse as I had 6 hours to kill, if you have never been to Kuwait and experienced the departure lounge let me describe it.

Most prominent feature of Kuwait departure lounge are the signs to the “Bomb Shelter”, then there is the Duty free, definitely no booze but plenty of cigarettes, loads of chocolates, limited selection of photographic and electrical items, but all this is dwarfed by the selection of perfumes mainly for men, some could kill a mosquito at 100meters, obviously to mask the smell of those that do not bathe as much as they should.

Then there was the cafeteria, defiantly no hot food, most of the food was displayed on a refrigerated table and all looked well past it’s sell by date, the only fresh meat was the occasional recently perspired fly, that was really all there was to see, it was on of the most boring times of my life waiting for my next flight to be called, eventually my flight was called and we all lined up outside the departure gate, we were waiting some time before the security people got the act organised.

When security started to process those at the start of the queue, nearly all passengers by this time were waiting in the queue and I was about half way down, the queue moved slowly until just before it was my turn to be screened, then this wailing sound started coming from some tinny wall speakers, security people just stopped, switch off the scanners, shut and locked all doors, then disappeared, to return some 15 minuets latter, I eventually did get my flight, needless to say it is my intention never to fly Kuwait Airlines or stopover in Kuwait ever again, even if I am paid to…

P.S. this was a few years ago and things may have changed so if you have flown with Kuwait recently please coment...

Thank you to everyone for the helpful info. I am not worried about too many Arabs being on the plane, as I am heading in a totally different direction. I am just making a 2 hour flight to Hong Kong with them one way. I will purchase tickets with a better airline in Hong Kong round trip, and not use the return leg of the ticket with Gulf Air.

I realy don't understand where u came up with ur comments from. I've been in a contract in an Arab country for the past 3 years (where 99% are muslims ) and according to their religion they should shower 5 times a day. I wonder if a person would smell after that ??????? moreover, if u ever come to this part of the world, u would need to change ur cloths at least twice a day coz everyone does so and u' would be looked at as dirty if u don't unlike when I was in the states when u would wear a jeans for 7 consecutive days (if not more)

back to the subject, I'd always prefer that one should fly Gulf Air or Emirates due to the less risk of these planes being hijacked or bombed. This is b'coz most of these attacks won't traget arabs or muslims so we are safer if we fly with them on their planes.

I can say with certainty that the Arab gentleman who sat next to me on 6 October on Emirates did not dutifully follow the 5 showers a day; unless of course he was showering with donkey piss. I can also say that I doubt if he had ever used a toothbrush in his life. Fortunately the flight was not full and I was able to sit in an empty row. Again, I am not saying that you will always sit next to someone who smells. I can also say that I do not have the statistical evidence to back my claims. I can only speak based on my experiences and based on this, I will stick with my claim that your chances of sitting next to someone who has body odor is increased on an Arab airline over let's say Thai Airways. As I also stated, other than this inconvenience (which six hours of flight time will either kill you or you will become acclimated to the odor), my flights on Gulf and Emirates were very good. If you have other experiences, by all means pass them on. I gave my experiences and quoting the Koran will not change the funk that I had to smell in the past.

They don't shower 5 times a day, just wash there
hands and feet when ever they go and pray.
In about the last year I know of about 6 times when people were asked to move on a plane as they smelt....of those 2 were westeners, and only 1 was an Arab. Thats not a statistic....just something i've seen.
