CX has great coach cabin service but the seats suck if you are a large framed American.
CX also has better dep and arr times
UA has better coach seats than CX. Way better if you consider E+
The deal is good if u don't care about FF miles but for another $200 you can buy a CX tix that will give you Asia miles.

What difference does it make to me if the stews are prettier on the Asian airlines. I'm not going to get laid off of them.
Flight time is longer on UA but I sleep most of the way. I get a break at Narita that's not that long and I get into BKK at 10:30 or 11:30. Make my way to Pattaya by 1or 1:30 and pick up a BG or have one meet me at my hotel.
For me the frequent flyer miles along with upgrades make a difference.

Pretty FAs is probably the least important of the many pros I mentioned relative to the CX flight, I am not sure why you picked that point out.
For the economy traveller, I wouldn't call that old circular area of Narita with plastic seats you have to wait much of a break compared to HK.
The first time or infrequent traveller isn't going to get upgrades on UA, but like I said I understand it may be better for the repeat UA flyers that go frequently enough for upgrades if they don't mind the other items.

I have noticed the seat width on CX as well, I have gotten bulkhead seats in the past that alleviate it a bit by being able to stretch out and lie at an angle when sleeping. Anbody know their seat widh relative to other cariers (e.g., UA) ?

I am a 1K on UA and Gold on CX. I hate the arrival and depa times for UA. Arriving at 23:00 and leaving at the ungodly hour of 7:00 after a night of partying just plain sucks! With CX you can arrive at 10:30 and enjoy your day and depart at 10am or 16:00 and have a breakfeast lunch massage, sleep late or get a last quickie in before departing.
Also the 3.5-4 hour flight from HKG-BKK is a breeze compared to the 6hr flight from NRT-BKK.
I get lounge access in NRT but the UA lounges sort of sucks and the best thing about them is the private shower room and free wi-fi. If ur hungry u have to hustle over to the SQ lounge for food.
CX lounges are way better and have the shower rooms as well but you don't stay long enough on your layover to BKK to enjoy them.
UA is better if you can get the upgrades and mileage bonuses. UA's biggest strength is that they are part of the Staralliance and thus you can always find a way to redeem your miles, which is why they are my primary carrier.
CX is better if you have the mileage transferred to an AA FF account in order to get the FF perks and bonuses. Asiamiles program is only good if u are in HKG.
Take the miles out of the equation and CX beats UA in every category except seats from a coach traveling experience, as far as getting to BKK.
As far as this deal is concerned for the guy who does not play the status and FF game (which is most people, I have come to find out) this is a good deal.

BigDUSA, where do you buy your UA tickets? In December I got decent ones from Buffalo to BKK for trip in March but when I was looking for my friend recently UA tickets were $1800 - ouch.

There seems to be only Q and higher fares available right now from UAL or UAL.com for travel after Mar 20, last time I checked. You may have better luck contacting a UA consolidator that has cheaper fares. I know that angeltravel.com usually has V fares for sale. I have used them quite often for last minute UA tix to BKK.
