Hong Kong is not asian??????

Thai citizens are actually allowed up to 30 days visa on arrival in Hong Kong
Thai citizens are entilitled to visa on arrival in singapore and hong kong it is free because you don't have to pay for it! It is discretionary to the immigration official yes of course - just like it is discretionary for any citizen of any country, if they have reason to believe the person entering singapore is coming to work (e.g they think the thai girl is coming for prostitution) they they can be denied entry. However there is a recirocal visa on arrival policy between the 2 countries there is absolutely no reason a thai citizen can't travel to singapore for tourism.

Re-read my post. Hong Kong is not ASEAN (Assoc of South East Asian Nations). Of course it is Asian being within that continent!!

What do you mean ALLOWED? And ENTITLED? DEFINITELY NOT! Nobody is entitled to anything. I hold a British Passport. It entitles me to nothing except residence in the UK. Or do you mean available? Visas are available on arrival to many nationalities at many different immigration entry points in many countries. There are reciprocal visa on arrival poloicies. There are however no entitlements or rights. My comments stand.

macaler - wretched treatment, truely appaling.

There's a TG, allegedly from phuket, at OT I've talked to several times over a year who travels back and forth frequently. I don't know if they give her a hard time, but she does get in.

I suspect that entry via Changi airport would be easier than via the causeway. The appearance of wealth makes a big difference. My understanding from an ex-PSA employee is that Changi immigration officials are expected to clear passangers faster than other check points (about 10-15 seconds average instead of 20-25) - which means less chance of scrutiny and a hard time.

Sorry for my mistake I did not know what ASEAN meant, but I do now.

Entiltled - a just claim. Which is a thai citizen coming to singapore for purely TOURISM puposes -not going to try to work, not going to cause a threat etc, someting that is allowed under sing law.

I understand that singaporean officials may be tough on some thais entering the country this is because of the number of Thai illegals working there some of course as we know in prostitution, or perhaps coming for other illicit activities.

I would suggest that if a thai girl comes to singapore looking perhaps less affluent, i.e wearing street clothes (and it is easy to tell the quality of clothes worn by a experienced eye) possibly with uneducated english this will lead the immigration officials to be suspicious.

Having worked in immigration in the UK having a prearranged visa makes no difference, entry requirements still have to satisfied in the eyes of an immigration official. If the official believes that person will pose a threat, could not support themselves, is going to try to work etc, they will not be allowed into the country whether the have a prearranged visa or a visa on arrival. (i'm not even aware that a country would issue a prearranged visa to someone entitled ( ( that word again) ) to a visa on arrival, but I could be wrong). So to put it simply a prearranged tourist visa adds no extra security, (if one can be arranged). In fact because one is not required for tourism for thai citizens having one is likely to arrouse even more suspicion from an offical, creating even greater difficulty.

It's the same for me everytime I go to australia. I'm youngish (looking Under30), and everytime I go i'm wearing casual clothes with a rucksack. I get a grilling from the immigration guys, I find it frustrating because I have no intention of working or living there and they do not seem grill older tourists however it's just the way it is. They lose 10000 odd UK citizens a year in aus and they want to stop it.

So if you're worried about your girl/boy or have had trouble in the past get her dressed up in respectable non street / whore clothes and get her to go easy on the makeup. And if she still gets grilled then unfortunately thats the way it is, prearranged visas won't change that, at least she is not being turned away. The singaporeans want tourists with money to spend, and with the disparity in the cost of many luxury goods between singapore and thailand means there are many thais very keen to come and spend their baht, and the singaporeans are very happy to come and let them do it. After all there are plenty of Thais out there with a lot more cash than the average westener.

I am sorry but I couldn't disagree with you more on your interpretation of entitlement. You say that a Thai is entitled ("has a right to under Singapore Law" REALLY!) to a visa if they are going to Singapore for the purposes of tourism (and can demonstrate that). Not so.

I take your point that having a pre-arranged visa is no guarantee that you will be allowed entry if say you are naked, drunk, high or whatever.

But you are trying to apply UK logic to an Asian situation vis-a-vis Thais and a reputation which proceeds them.

geez man give me a break with your pedantic shit - your certainly not's, and your couldn't disagree agree mores.

You sound like that guy down the library saying - I think you'll find you're in the wrong section!

I didn't say "have a right to under singapore law". I was refering to tourism rules legislated under singapore law. My interpretation of entiltled in this issue is the same as British immigration. If it is different to singapore immigration I don't know, but I'm sure you'll be able to ask them next time you're there. Really! Matron!

My experience of Laos was that Thais crossing for the day did not need a passport. Anyone planning to spend a few days there may need one ( a passport).
There was also the situation where a few Thais with passports were waving white pieces of paper around..I was wondering if this might be a temporary "visa" which can be removed once they cross back into Thailand..no idea why unless they travel to Laos so often that their passport would be full after 20 visits. The Laos visa takes up a full page & then another page for entry/exit stamps. They certainly like their paperwork!!

Does anyone have experience of taking their Thai GF into China? I have a big project in Shanghai and will have to spend a few weekends there. She has been bugging me to go there to meet me. Does anyone know how much of a hassle getting her into there is likely to be.

By the way I have taken her (or her predecessors) into both Singapore and Hong Kong several times with no problems. I have found that it is always easier if you are standing in line behind her when going into Singapore. When the immigration person asks about money or funds, she just says she is with me and no more questions are asked and I get a big smile. I guess that might not work if the immigration person is female.

CG,

I've taken my TGF into Laos (Vientiane) a couple of times. At least for as far as Vientiane, it did not require a visa, just that she show her passport (in fact, her whole family came with us that day, and she I and spent the night in Vientiane -- don't recall members of her family showing passports, come to think of it). On that trip, I bought her a visa at the nongkhai border station anyway, as I wanted her to start to get some activity in her passport.

The second time we went, she just showed her passport, paid a small fee, and went across. She was trying to be thrifty, and wouldn't let me pay for a visa that time. The Thai's have an arrangement with Laos that lets them do this, without the overhead of a visa. I'm not even sure if she would have needed a passport to do this, though it would seem to me the best thing for her to have.

Not sure what would happen if you stepped off a plane in Luang Prabang with your TG, as that is upcountry, and they may require her to get a visa as well.

- Balls
