I have read that the new airport is 35km (about 22 miles) East of Bangkok.

Regards

South/Southeast, about 1/3 of the way to Pattaya.

Not that far, Amphur Bang Phli, Samut Prakan, it's on the same page in my Bangkok street map as Thanon Srinakarin, looks about 4-5 km further out than that (no proper scale on the page, but certainly nowhere close to 1/3 of the way to Pattaya from Bangkok, though maybe 1/3 closer than the new airport.

About 25km from downtown Bangkok, wherever that is...

Try the facts at:

Closer than Don Muang...as long as they get the access right.....

The distance will depend on where you define as "Bangkok".

But it is easy to get to. Drive stright down Rama 9 which is now a new 4 lane expressway that leads straight into the Chonburi motorway (route 7). As you go past the Rom Kao road junction look to the right and you can see the airport building.

15 mins from Sukhumvit Soi 3 in no traffic. Same as Don Muang.

Drove it myself and while I didn't write down the actual mileage, that was my perception, but "perceptions" can be wrong. Cheers.

FWIW, 90 minutes to Pattaya from Don Muang at midnight. New airport 60 minutes to Pattaya during early afternoon on a Saturday with no traffic jams.

If they don't finish improving the roads or have mass transit when the new airport opens, then the travel time will worse than it is now. But eventually I think it will be good.

Why don't they have sky train like trans into town that connects with the current sky train system from the airport?? And run that thing 24 -7??

Well...let me tell you the story I heard some time ago.

See all the new taxi's around town, the single coloured ones, green first, then some blues and oranges...the nice new ones. They are the dedicated new airport taxis. When the new airport opens, no more will we have to queue to get the horrible old rickety taxi, oh no, it'll be new ones on tap.

Great.

Now there was talk of extending the Skytrain to the new airport by sending it up soi 103 (i think, certainly somewhere down that way.

Of course, the story gets a bit muddier now, the taxi firm that owns all the new airport taxis is owned by one of the Deputy Prime Ministers, and has quite a few major fingers in the contributors pie.

You getting the picture yet?

All hearsay of course......

I think they will eventually have some mass transit to the airport planned, but those are huge construction projects and take years to complete.
