It's real easy to get a 60 day visa from the Thai Embassy in the US. Go to the Embassy website down load the forms. Takes about 10 days to get your passport back.
BigD, good advice for US citizens who want to stay legally between 30 and 60 days. The fee is $25. Here is the link with the information:

Of course, if you are staying less than 30 days, this is unnecessary, just get the visa-on-arrival.

I don't like the fact that I have to send them my passport to get 60 day tourist VISA but I guess I don't have any other choice.

joybkk-

If you are worried about sending your passport through the mail, there are a number of safe ways to to it:

http://www.thaiembdc.org/index.htm
Tourist visa.................. US $25.00 per entry for pleasure purpose only. {EP note: Never were truer words written on any government Web site about the applicant’s intentions.} (require copy airline ticket or itenery)
(Maximum stay 60 day, extension of stay may be applied in Thailand.)
When submitting application by mail, a self-addressed envelope size 6"x9" or large enough to fit all passports with sufficient postage stamps is required. Metered stamps will not be accepted. Please also include a 37 cent-stamp for the cost of previously mailed application form to applicant. Applicant may have their visa mailed by choosing one of the following options:

$13.65 in postage for a next-day express mail (and additional 37-cent stamp for the cost of previously mailed form). Please include self address mailing label if possible.

$3.00 in postage, depending on weight, for certified mail (and an additional 37-cent stamp)

$8.60 in postage, depending on weight, for registered mail (and additional 37-cent stamp)

Federal Express, UPS, Air Born or DHL with account number
Important notice:
Applications are usually processed within 48 hours if submitted in person. Applying by mail will take approximately one week plus mailing time.

Applicants residing in CA, AK, AZ, ID, NV, OR, UT and WA should send their application forms to the Royal Thai Consulate-General, Los Angeles.

Applicants residing in CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI and VT should send their application forms to the Royal Thai Consulate-General, New York.

Applicants residing in IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, SD and WI should send their applications forms to the Royal Thai Consulate-General, Chicago.

In addition to applying at above addresses, applicants can also obtain their visas at the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Texas (Dallas), Texas (El Paso), Texas (Houston) and Dominican Republic

Or you can have a visa service handle the whole thing for you, but that of course costs extra bucks. Travel agencies, even small-town ones, have contacts with such services.

SAS stopped me one time and ask me to go to the counter and change the date on the ticket when I was going back to 30 days. (1 year ticket) Then it was no problem. IF you want to stay 8 weeks get a Visa like they said before for 2 month. If you want to see Cambodia for 1 day or more take a 30 days visa and make the trip. They hardely stop USA EU people. The reason is the airline has to pay for your return ticket if you become a problem in Thailand.

Most countries, Thailand among them, have blanket regulations so that they can kick out a tourist if he gets in trouble or runs out of money. Also, some raggedy-ass backpacker types are denied entry to Thailand if they can't show enough cash and have to take the first flight for which their tickets can be rewritten..

Just got my visa via mail application.

I didn't feel comfortable when I sent my passport through mail but luckily everything went smoothly.

Took about 10 days to receive my passport back with tourist vis stamp on it.

leaving soon and need to do the visa run, but rather than going to laos across the bridge,

would like to go into burma, however last time I went I never got a visa just walked through imigration spent a few hours and came back.

Do I need to apply on leaving or entering as said they just looked at the passport and that was it.

Or maybe I should try the trat crossing as I will be in rayong around the time, if you go across here is there any hotels for a night and then come back.

thanks

I phoned the Thai embassy in London today to ask about getting a tourist visa, I only got through to a recorded voice which said I had to apply in person for a tourist visa.

Does anybody know if that is definitely the case in the UK or can you apply via the mail.
