Dew flew back to Bangkok tonight and she sent me a message "Nong Ngu Hao OK, I think finish now". When I checked her flight, it was only about 15 minutes late.

she get her bags yet? Listening to the radio on the way into work, they said some people waited 4 hours for their bags yesterday and complained there was not an official in sight to even discuss it with. That said, over 800 flights on the first day, bound to be some hiccups.

Like most TGs, she showed up on Monday ready to go with a small backpack so no checked luggage. Edit: Later that night when I spoke to her, Dew told me she went to Departures and got into a taxi that was pulling up and letting people off. No wait and no airport surcharge.

CG, glad Dew arrived back safe and sound and virtually on time! Flights from Hong Kong to Bangkok late yesterday morning and in the early afternoon were delayed by up to an hour (mine included). I was impressed by the interior of the new airport but it was quite a ways to immigration. Thankfully it was a walkway most of the way. Signs to immigration were OK. A couple of negatives. The luggage stations are too close to the immigration counters and then once through customs you are straight into a very small area which was very crowded. That part of the airport is not as big as Don Muang. Taxi signs were basically non-existent. I asked a lady where the taxis were and she gave me an escort which I thought was pretty impressive. Only problem was, she took me to limousine taxis and I wanted public taxi. All I got then was a vague point of the hand "that way". Finally got downstairs and the queues were incredible. I was right at the end and all the available taxis were being grabbed by people at earlier taxi stations. So, flight late but smooth. Immigration no problem and babbage collection only about 15 or 20 minutes. Taxi chaos I accepted because of first day of operation. The taxi driver told me he had been waiting since 1pm and it was after 4 when he got to where I was waiting. Taxi meter was 185 baht so adding 65 baht for tolls and 50 baht surcharge it was pretty much the same as Don Muang.

Clearly, the situation on the first day at Suvarnabhumi was not the total chaos many had predicted. If problems with baggage conveyors and delays at check in or with flights arriving/departing were the biggest hassles, then Suvarnabhumi had a smoother first day than many new airports. Just to give perspective: Last Friday, we sat on the ground for more than two hours before takeoff on a flight to London from Newark Liberty, then waited 45 minutes on the ground before de-planing at Gatwick. On the return flight, I had to wait nearly 60 minutes for my turn to check in, even though I was in the priority queue for elite frequent flyers in business class. I only had carry-on luggage, but a colleague who'd checked bags had to wait nearly an hour to get them back. Evil

Right EP, in fact I think the pre-hype that went against this airport was second only to the pre-hype ablout Y2K. The press is just trying to cover their ass and trying to make some story out of nothing. Given the fact that it was pouring down rain the night of the big move of equipment, I think they did a great job.

A friend of mine caught Airasia to Udorn Thani yesterday (29th). Flight was scheduled to leave around 4.15pm. It was 30 mins late, gotta expect that, happen's in well established airports world wide. She said the passenger terminal had no problems, friendly staff, and everything was running smooth. I say 'well done' airport builders.

I was the second person off the first Qantas flight into Suvarnabhumi yesterday. QF2 from London landed at 3:40pm. I left the aircraft at 3:50pm and was through Immigration 25 minutes later. My bag hit the baggage carousel as soon as I got there. Went outside looking for a metered taxi as I'd read somewhere the authoritites had relented. Couldn't see any but there were a lot of touts. Eventually spoke to someone who said they were downstairs. Returned to the terminal and went downstairs. It was outside there that I encountered what appeared to be utter chaos. No marked lines, multiple queues. I almost decided to go upstairs and pay for a limo or God forbid surrender to a tout. However I persisted and eventually saw that there were waves of taxis being allowed in and that there was a degree or organisation at the head of the queues. In the end it only took me about 15 minutes. All up I was in my cab under an hour after landing. I'd say that is a world class performance for any large airport on day 1. Regards, F46
