never been to Chaing Mai,but i took the overnight train from BKK to Nong Khai.
but this link gives times and prices of the sleepers to CM.

i enjoyed my overnight trip to NK and as TT says,you will not have 'cabins' but sex is certainly easy.
i travelled with my girl and while we had 2 different beds(upper berths) we settled into one bunk and pulled the curtain.
