I've booked my ticket on Cathay, and am content with it. But I've also decided to pay a visit to my favorite city, Macau. I went over to the Thai Air Asia website and and checked the fares, 1099B each way! I put in my itinerary and low and behold the total fare came out to 5500B+! The fees/taxes are 150% more than the ticket, and thats without checking in a bag. I used to use Star Tour in Hollywood to do my ticketing, but for the last few years have just been using the airline website, does anyone use a bucket shop or expedia or anything?

the whole thing is out of control and this week I am going to transfer all my miles from various airlines to my amex account because I think some of the carriers are going to go out of business and I will lose my miles.

BobFiveHead, Cathay Pacific allows you to layover in Hong Kong for up to several days at no additional cost. I think this helps promote Hong Kong tourism, besides HK is their hub. So you could scoot over to Macau either coming, going or even both. Here's a cool airfare comparison website. It will even email you when a target airfare price point is reached. http://www.farecompare.com/section_homepages/insider.html

Thai Airways has decided to stop their service to JFK starting in two weeks because of the rise in jet fuel. Plus, they are cutting back LAX flights per week. The Wall Street Journal says the company is forced to sell its Airbus 340-500 to compensate for rising fuel costs. That seems really severe! http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121276009392851797.html Additionally, they are increasing all fares from LAX to BKK by $281 each way starting on June 25th. From their webpage: "Thai Airways International Public Company Limited adjusted its fuel surcharge on international and domestic flights, effective as of 25 June 2008 onwards, due to the increase in jet fuel cost in the world market that has increased on a regular basis. 10. Impose fuel surcharge rate of USD 281.00 per sector, on the return route Bangkok-New York v.v., and Bangkok-Los Angeles 1. Flight Operations between Bangkok and New York Effective as from 1st July 2008, THAI will cease flight operations between Bangkok and New York due to the continual surge in oil prices. 2. Restructuring of flight operations to Los Angeles THAI will reduce direct flight operations between Bangkok and Los Angeles from 7 flights to 5 flights per week, utilizing A340-500 aircraft type until September 2008. For THAI winter schedule, THAI will operate flights to Los Angeles via Osaka, Japan, utilizing Boeing 777-200 ER aircraft. http://www.thaiair.com/About_Thai/Newsroom/Press_Release/Press_Year_2008/press115.htm http://www.thaiair.com/About_Thai/Newsroom/Press_Release/Press_Year_2008/press119.htm I remember flying on Cathay LAX-BKK in 2003 for $549 RT, plus taxes. Today, just the fuel surcharge is $562 RT on Thai starting 6/25.

I am going back to the UK for a few weeks, I have some work things to do. When I normally go back home I fly business class gulf air. BKK-LHR return 62000bt and my future wife comes with me. Great things about this is……. 1 We get all the standard things you would expect from business class at a better price, fully opening sleeper seats (From my many flights with them) I have been upgraded to first at least 5 times. 2 A halfway stop for a smoke (the future wife not me smokes) 3 The lounge at the halfway point is an award winning lounge and it really is amazing. 4 When we arrive at LHR the future wife has priority clearance through immigration and clears faster than I do even though I am the one with a UK passport and hers is Thai. 5 When you arrive at terminal 3 LHR you also have the of the American Airlines arrivals lounge for free. 6 Our bags are waiting for us at the carousel (never waited) and when we clear customs a driver takes our bags from us and drives us anywhere in a Mercedes Benz in 50 mile radius for free. Perfect as my best mate lives within 15 miles away from Heathrow, as this is where he works. I have been told for this trip no driver. The prices will not be the same as of August and are going up at least 50%. My future wife said she is not flying with me this time as she is too busy working but she will follow me afterwards. She does not really care about flying business class as she is not as fat as me and she does not drink on the plane. She also has about 5 platinum Thai based credit cards and one of the many benefits of her cards is she gets free lounge accesses in allot of airports. We started asking about economy flights for her and the prices we got ranged from 52000bt Egypt Air(travel agent) to166000bt Thai air (Thai Air website). I always thought buying flights BKK to LHR return was cheaper that LHR to BKK return. Looks like times have changed and prices are on the way up for sure and with less value ads. Anyone else do this trip (BKK-LHR-LHR-BKK) and can tell us how to not get a rip off price. Direct flights better for sure.

Hey, I just bought my ticket to Macau on Thai Air Asia, my least favorite airline. 5600 baht r/t. I started thinking too much after going back to the Cathay Pacific site and finding that the ticket that I purchased last week for $1133 was now $1170. CalEden, I had thought about doing a layover but that increases the airfare even more. Also I have a large object, no not that one, that would need to be checked into left luggage in Hong Kong, between those two things it makes more sense flying AirAsia, even though it sucks. It feels really good to have everything planned out and purchased months and months in advance. Now I am going to learn Thai!

I can't even imagine what your "large object" must be. Very sketchy. A stuffed yak, perhaps? From your prostate problems to your Sukhumvit underwear trials, your posts always give me a laugh. Your brother in Christ, Buttman

Not all gloom....Air Asia have started service out of OZ and were having a promotion recently as Air Asia X...have booked the wife and I a return trip to KL in March 2009 with as many frills as a budget airline can give you...meal, comfort kit, selected seating, baggage etc...cost so far $A462...still deciding on where to spend the week...Phuket or BKK/Pattaya...total airfare guestimate $A700 total for both of us. Enjoy. P.s They'll probably have gone broke by then...LOL
