I too have flown JFK to BKK on JAL. $800 is close to what I paid for a regular ticket less than two years ago, and that included taxes and fees and extra surcharges for weekend dates and stopovers. I also got nearly 20,000 FF miles out of the deal. Paying $800 for a courier ticket with no control and no rewards is a bit of a ripoff in my view, especially from a major gateway like NYC. I just recently got a ticket from a non-gateway airport in TX to BKK in December (generally considered the high season for those who don't know) for a base charge of $995 all-in including $250 worth of taxes, fees, and surcharges. The $800 JFK courier fare is a joke as-is in my view.

I completely agree with your perspective.
Although we are not in disagreement, if you (or anyone!) can find me a flight on Dec. 28th from JFK to BKK, all inclusive, for under $900, I would be happy to pay for your rounds.

It works only at the big airlines cargo hubs, LAX, SFO, and JFK etc. You got to fly at moments notice. No plans and free. 1 credit class students and really retired folks works best. But they the cargo middlemen and larger orgs have it scammed.
Those courier net sites get money by selling you membership dues and offering discount through their travel agencies that even you could find if you surf enough daily for good fares both macro and at micro search levels.
http://www.bookingbuddy.com like sites and then go to the airlines sites directly. Use Ebay to find open frequent flyer coupons can be bought for 50%. Coupons give upgrades or 100 bucks off etc.
Search everyday though. I wish flight were $650 and fuel prices were stable then every 2 months at P4P paradise.
Better way yet hook up and have lots of airline worker friends that really get deals. I knew an Alaskan air pilot that got me good western USA fares; say 25% off.
