Thanks for the tip, Don5252. When I bought my China Air ticket for my trip later this month, I bought it from a Chinese travel agency in PHX. That purchase was the culmination of lots of work, searches, etc. trying to find a good ticket at a good price. My assumption was really shattered when the China Air 800 number booking person said I could buy cheaper from a Chinese travel agency in my city. WHAT!?!? What ever happened to online booking or even directly with the airline not being the cheapest? I thought travel agencies were something from the pre-internet days. Show what I know (or don't know.) I've only talked with one Chinese person here; by chance bumped into her at the mailboxes (which is a treat in itself cuz she's SO beautiful and has no idea of her beauty, which makes her all the more beautiful, but I digress... ) She readily brought me this Chinese supplement to the newspaper, and there was the phone no. of a Chinese travel agency she used recently. WACKY! And, upon calling there, it WAS cheaper!

Maybe everybody already knows this scenario, but if not, just thought I'd post it here to possibly help someone in the future.

i've read posts here from people that claim the best price is by dealing online direct w/ airlines, maybe for some but my travel agent is cheaper everytime, possibly because they buy (chunks) of seats

I took a chance and flew EVA for the first time recently from LAX-->BKK. Usually I fly Cathay Pacific, but figured I'd give EVA a shot. Flew Premium Laurel Class on their Boeing 777, which has 180 degree flat beds, real comforters (not just some wool blanket), great entertainment, larger bathrooms, and above average food. I was VERY impressed. In fact, I could say it was my favorite trans-Pacific business class experience---better than both Cathay and JAL. The only advantage, in my opinion, to flying Cathay is the connection in Hong Kong; I'm not a big fan of Taipei.

I purchased a one way ticket Premium Laurel class LAX-->BKK for $1600 directly through the EVA site. Purchased another one way ticket BKK-->LAX for $1200, all taxes included. Grand total, $2800. For some reason, buying the tickets separately, rather than roundtrip, was nearly $500 cheaper.

The cheapest Cathay Pacific business class I found was about $4500. Saving nearly $1700 with a much more comfortable, 180 degree seat, EVA Premium Laurel on their new 777's has me hooked. Very surprised, and highly recommend.

This is good to hear. I've been flying Cathay to BKK for the last 7 years - I really enjoy flying on them, but their business class prices have really gotten out of hand. I'm flying on EVA next month in Premium Laurel (I have not flown on EVA since 1999), so I'm glad to see a good report.

Just an FYI:

For those flying out of the United States Northwest, EVA has lowered prices out of Seattle for fall departures (05 SEP through 31 OCT). Economy is going for $836, inclusive of all taxes and fees, and Evergreen Deluxe is pricing out at $1,036, also all-inclusive. No information on when tickets have to be purchased to lock the fares, but I know I snapped up one of the Evergreen Deluxe seats for my fall sojourn.

Thought I'd add this update for EVA regulars - I just returned from a trip to Jakarta, flying Evergreen Deluxe from Vancouver-Taipei and then upgrading to Premium Laurel for the Taipei-Jakarta return leg.

The plane was a new, or recently refurbished, 747; and what used to be Evergreen Deluxe in the front of the plane is now Premium Laurel, with ED pushed back to the next compartment. The seats all have the interactive entertainment system now, and there appears to be only two washrooms to the section versus the four that the front compartment has. I think I liked the front cabin better, it was nice to go into the open space at the bottom of the stairs and do exercises there during the long flight, also it is quieter if you are close to the front.

The Premium Laurel upgrade was great - the first time I have ever flown business class anywhere, and what a treat it is. The seats are electric and adjust every which way, the food was superb and I was able to pre-order my meal choice from the internet too. The plane was a new A330. On the return leg I was lucky enough to share seating space with a "deadheading" flight attendant from the previous leg, very pleasant lady and great to talk to.

Now if I can just get enough points to fly PL on the Pacific leg, I'll really be happy....at present rate, it should only take a few more years....*sigh*...I guess I better keep buying lottery tickets....

I'm going LAX-BKK on EVA on Feb 6, on the 10:30PM flight, and the ticket costs $786 and 5,000 miles. That was directly through the website. If you're an Evergreen Member when you start looking for airfares you put your number and password in first, then it will also display the special members fares.

My number one thing for EVA over China is that I can select my seat ahead of time on EVA, and with my bladder that is an important consideration.

here is a classic.... I am about to hit the 1 million mile mark with Eva........ So I write them a letter and say "hey, so all the other airlines have a million mile club that gives you lifetime perks....... so what does Eva offer to 1 million mile flyers"?

I sent it to the LA office, got a nice letter in return that they were forwarding my letter to TPE.... of course never heard back from them. The will get naother letter in about a month, this time a little stronger....

Is that a million total miles or a million BIS (butt in seat) miles? That makes a big difference.

I have over 2mm miles with American, but that's total, not BIS. For that I have lifetime Platinum.
