Lowered Summer Airfares - $610 from LAX > BKK as of 6/09...add taxes closer to $700 off season tickets with returns < Nov 30th China Air - cattle call but consistant economy prices and numerous flights, been with Delta FFM for 5 years now...but is TPE boring....business class upgrades good...but econ sucks when returning back weekends are always packed EVA Air - better elite setting / still stop in TPE boring preferred by many, the 777s are taken over 747s Anybody have any issues with EVA yet ?? quality, service, seats, milage plans, late arrivals, flight schedules etc Ive read over the EVA reports, most been
Cathay Pacific ? Hong Kong stopover not boring Emirates ? Used to be with StarAlliance /United Air prior 2004 but prices went through the roof and service quality by the #1 big corps fell off.... Tokyo not boring Then theres Thai Airways, flew once BKK and Phuket....damm felt like a King as to seats and service... but they cut flights back... fuel price hedging Too bad SouthWest doesnt have a BKK Punter special flight once a week

Eva's 'Elite' is definitely a step down from 'Deluxe'. Deluxe was basically a 90's Business seat. 5 years ago it wasn't worth bumping up to Biz, 'cause there wasn't much difference. They've stepped up service and seat comfort in Biz and now they're top notch. Their miles expire after a couple years, so it's worth moving up on the long Pacific leg. If I'm not using FFMs, I take them every time. They're still best bang for the buck. Good entertainment equipment, hot Stews, but IMO the worst food in the air. TPE is a bore, worse than NRT (if that's possible). When you get to "Silver', Eva will let you in the lounges and that makes the layover bearable. I'll be flying Thais LAX-BKK direct flight in Biz in a couple weeks. What'll be interesting is whether I'll be wishing I had a layover. wj

Could you qualify what makes a transit destination 'boring' or 'not boring', particularly when you have a transit stop-over, and basically walk through the airport from one terminal to the other during the 90 minutes allocated? In the rare instances that I have a 2-3 hours layover in TPE, I just head to the CI lounge (or, for those without privs, head to THE MORE, for $25), grab some snacks, and take a refreshing shower. I'm just curious what makes Narita and Hong kong airports less boring, especially in the transit areas.

*CathAy* - as in Cathay Pacific. Cathay is the name China was previously known as, in medieval Europe - as such, the name of the Airline makes more sense, and maybe you'll remember how to spell it, knowing that.

*EmIrAtes* - as in Emirates Airline, derived from 'Emir' as in 'a territory administered by an Emir' (a Muslim ruler).

CI - $615 when you fly Wednesday through Sunday -- $1,100 when flying Monday and Tuesdays, in July. Go figure how they come up with those whacky rules for pricing.

The last time I was in TPE, it was boring as every shop was closed when we arrived at 5 am. I had to wait a whole hour before the first coffee shop opened. Fortunately, I had a lovely Filipina who kept me company, before we went our separate ways a couple of hours later.

Boring ! as to the air carrier's main hub international airport terminal Taipei wins the Boring Award thumbsdown! Taipei's international terminal section has an outdated 1950s USSR Cold War interior; designed and styled by Khrushchev himself. It smells old!...Mildew and mold created from the wind driven rains dampen the concrete walls, like a dank basement. Bangkok has plenty dank concrete buildings to compare. The facilties and services are spartan at best, very lacking for waitovers. A Siberian Gulag style chow line for voBKa, tea, and potato soup would be a welcoming event for Taipei's stranded passengers; Da Da! Hell ! Fairbanks Alaska has better terminal services, facilties, and visual decor to keeps its stopover bush natives fed and aroused. Scenic Eastern Thai coastal flights in/out of U-Tapao airfield by way Bangkok Air's turbo props are more exciting than Taipei by a far Pattaya mile. And yes, to buck the boring TPE times, I carry my IPhone and ASUS 14 W laptop. Now as to the citys ! Hong Kong / Macau not Boring !

I'll give Taipei a lot of credit for having free showers. From the time I leave home to get to LAX, check in, catch the flight, fly to Taiwan is about 21 hours. Then because of the 2-3 hour wait I will visit the free showers, and after a dump, shave and shower, I feel human again, just in time for the flight to Bangkok. Also, one of my fondest memories is sitting in the coffee shop with my mom waiting for the BKK flight and just watch China Airlines flight crew after flight crew walking buy.

Depending on how much time I have, I just usual head to the CI lounge for a shower and some dim sum, including getting my WiFi fix. The one thing that is truly idiotic about TPE, is the unavailability of WiFi that is usable, in the airport. Chun-Wah Telecom providers service, it seems - and you get one of those splash pages, requesting you to pay2play. That's fine. The page, of course, is all in Chinese. They do have a link for an English page. When you go there, it explains all the services they offer (most, useless), and a link to a page to sign up for, and recharge, for pay-as-you-go WiFi access. You click on that link AND EVERYTHING IS IN CHINESE AGAIN. No English option, at all. No way to figure this out - idiots. I bet they have board meetings about the low signup rates at TPE, and how to possibly address that -- morons! Oh well, I just use the CI lounge, now, or THE MORE now (if I'm there with friends that aren't privileged to be allowed into the CI lounge) - though, there used to be a great soup restaurant that also offered free WiFi -- last I checked, it wasn't there anymore.

Although boring, I find it better than it used to be. I remember the SQ flight from Singapore to West Coast that made a stop over at TPE late at night (the same one that crashed there on take-off). I took that flight several times in the late 90s. TPE airport was totally dead then, at least at that time of night; everything closed; at least the terminal SQ used. One got the impression one was not missing much anyway (had they been open). Since then I have transited TPE during the 00s flying Eva, and although still boring, it has improved.
