I think Cathay has been raising their business class fare, and so the $7000 figure doesn't surprise me. I had been flying them from 2003 until last year, when their prices might have been a bit less. Either way, it's just too much, especially when you can go EVA for thousands less.

My only complaint with EVA Premium Laurel is that the 180 degree bed is on a down angle, which occasionally gives me the sensation of sliding down while sleeping. Otherwise, it's pretty damn good.

Lastly, there is only one restaurant in the terminal that EVA uses in Seattle, and it closes at 10 or 11pm. So if the business class lounge is not your thing, and you want to have some real food or some drinks before you leave at 2am, you have to go back to the main food court in the main terminal. It's only a 2 minute trip on the "terminal train," and I believe it's open until midnight. You can find a real meal there, then go back to the international terminal and wait until your departure at 2. No additional security screening to go back, btw.

... I can understand how they may consider time spent in the air as a waste of time, but I frankly did not take you for one of them.

On a case by case basis, it is not a waste of time. But when you think at 6 months added as a continuous strecth of time, it looks like too much. Hey, I have flown intercontinental flights just to come back in the same plane (after a quick turnaround) just to deliver something at the airport. I do like being on a plane. I once flew to Singapore from Madrid to Singapore the wrong way (MAD-JFK-YVR-HKG-SIN) just because my NY meeting got cancelled at the last minute and that was the ticket I had (it was 1st class at least).

When I was an IB banker, and kept flying every week everywhere, I liked the long haul flights to/from Asia, as that was when I was able to have time just for myself, totally disconnected. It was the time when I could read frivolous magazines, watch all the movies I hadnīt seen, and just drink Dom and have seconds and thirds of caviar (this was SQ first class - living in SIN at the time). Currently I am not liking long haul flights as much -maybe it has to do with flying in the back of the plane?

BTW, I think the premium coach seats from EVA (whatever that class is called) are great value. I remember finding RT tickets from the USA west coast, all the way to BKK for just over US$ 1k. The one thing I do not like is the TPE airport. I find it very boring.

If you consider that not so long ago, single destination trips could take 3-6 months at a time (like, across the US, coast to coast), or longer -- it's a bargain, before you dwell on it. I agree with you that to us kids of the modern age, 6 months might seem like a long stretch - but that's why I like to keep things in perspective, and remember how it was from 50-100 years earlier.

I actually like Coach flying - as long as you have an aisle seat, and are sitting in the sweet spot of the plane (i.e. with laptop power), I'm good. Especially once my ass lost 3 sizes, suddenly the seats are far more comfortable

Not surprising, seeing as how it's essentially Chinese, and the accompanying taste and style -- nevertheless, the various premium and VIP lounges are very enjoyable, and once you discover the fun shops (i.e. not the repetitive liquor and tobacco shops), there's some good stuff to waste time on...

I guess I would rather spend my money on the ground than in the air,

I am happy with a cheap regular seat, I really see no way its going to be that much better for the $500-$1000+ each way that a business class seat costs,

but thats also because its out of MY pocket and not a company....

see you in the cheap seats

It does depend a great deal on tall you are, and sometimes who you are sitting next to. If I were relatively short, economy would not be a problem. But at 6'1", economy can be a real pain.

Agree. I also go Cattle Class, but I don't have to hit the ground running in LOS..can take a couple days to adjust, unlike the business/pleasure mongers

Mongers from the America's have it tuff with regards to flight time

I think it also depends on what you do when geet onthe ground. If you then stay in bkk for 1 night, then are off to the village for a while, sometimes it is better to spoil yourself. Also, in many cases, the flight over is used to decompress from everyday life and spoiling yourself in business class is not a bad way to go.

Everyone has different reason why they fly in each section, for me the added cost is not so much as when you are Diamond on EVA they usually upgrade and every year or so I get 4 free upgrade certificates so between my miles, free upgrades and 4 free upgrade certificates I can pretty much fly PL all the time. But I always book deluxe
Economy and believe that class is the best deal going.

Economy is my way, I always ask for bulkhead seat, 9 times out of 10 there's one available, lots of leg room, sometimes only one more seat in that row, another plus, some kind of sedative is helpful too

My trips are usually short, so I need to be able to hit the ground running, and I can't do that in coach class. At least EVAs business class (Premium Laurel) is a decent price.
