The services of skytrains were disturbed by the red-shirts rally inn Bangkok. Sometimes, the BTS had to close all stations for safety passengers and staff.

Once the airport link is open, On arrival, one would take the train from the airport to the Phaya Thai station, then transfer to BTS in order to get to Nana-Suk area ?

And for departure, one would take BTS from Nana to Phaya Thai, check in luggage at Phaya Thai airport station, then take the train into airport ?

Seems like a nice alternative to taxi and busy road traffic ?

... it would seem so, yes, at the surface... until you've dragged your bags down uneven sidewalks, crowded with street vendors, and hauled them from the street level up the stairs to the train departure platform... the equivalent of a 5-story climb!

... to save money, the Thai village idiots who developed the BTS removed the overwhelming majority of the escalators that were correctly programmed into the BTS by Siemens AG... the BTS' brilliant plan is to re-install the deleted escalators over time as the need arises... well... we know THAT ain't gonna happen in "do-just-enough" Thailand.

... if you are a Thai cynic (as me), you might think that the BTS intentionally removed the escalators, counting on the Airport Link to actually PAY the BTS to have the excalators re-installed in the BTS so that air travellers will use the Airport Link rather than taxis, to avoid schlepping luggage up and down 5-story staircases.

... so... think about that 5-story climb, carrying your bags, after a long hike on broken pavement, threading around gaggles of street vendors carts, in suffocating 30+ degree heat and crushing humidity... and maybe rain... and if you are traveling with young children, or are elderly, forget it.

... it could have been far better... but, the BTS, one of the highwater marks amongst Thai public works projects (right up there with stupifying Suvarnabhumi Airport abortion), is the best Thais can do.

... (gotta go... uh, taxi!).

I hear you.

I've used similar system local subway-airport rail and checkin in HKG before. But because I'm flying into US and the higher security, I can't even used the rail station checkin. I suspect the same will apply in BKK.

This might be good for travelers who carry light then.

... maybe someone who has actually taken it can comment on the Airport Link system... as reported above, they are now offering free rides during the sea trials.

... I read sometime ago that there was controversy by the government about the proposed rail car designs... that the cars were designed like the BTS' rolling stock, as a commuter, with plastic seats set against the sides of the car and a lot of standing room in the middle (as though this were a 5-minute commute, not a 30-minute trip)... the critique also complained that no luggage storage was provided in the cars.

... so... imagine crawling off a long-haul flight late at night (when most arrive), jet-lagging your brains out and exhausted... then, standing with your luggage between your legs for the commute into BKK... then, a trip across town on the BTS (wonder if they removed the escalators from the interchange to save money, as with the BTS system?)... then, carrying your luggage down the equivalent of a 5-story staircase to the street level... and then, dragging your luggage through the clean, level and uncongested public sidewalks to your nearby hotel... 35+ degrees... maybe raining.

... those junked-out little taxis and those crooked, conniving taxi drivers might look pretty darn good if they fail on this Airport Rail thing.

... while we all hope they might get this one right, these are after all the same guys who produced the stunning Suvarnabhumi Airport cluster-f***... will be interesting to see what doing it the Thai way (again) produces.

... but... I am clearly getting way out infront... unfairly so... have any of our members actually ridden this thing, yet?... or, know someone who has?... anyone have even a second-hand a report?

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 21 july 2010 :-

Airport Link to start commercial operation Aug 23, 2010
====================================

BANGKOK: -- Suvarnabhumi airport's Airport Link commercial services will begin August 23 with special discount fares offered until the end of the year.

After presiding at ceremony during staff training for the Airport Rail Link project linking Suvarnabhumi Airport and Makkasan area in downtown Bangkok, Permanent Secretary for Transport Supot Saplom said he believed that independent engineers will issue the certificate permitting the project to open for service, as all flaws have been fixed, and test-runs by State Railway of Thailand (SRT) workers continue to be conducted.

The 28km rail link connects Suvarnabhumi Airport in Samut Prakan province east of Bangkok and the City Air Terminal (CAT) in Bangkok's Makkasan area, where passengers will be able to check in their baggage.

Services of both the Express Service and the City Line will be operational on the same tracks at speeds of up to 160km per hour.

The Express Service is a 15-minute non-stop journey between the City Terminal and the airport with a fare at Bt150 per trip. During the opening period, the fare charged will be Bt100.

City Line commuter trips, with set fares at Bt15-Bt45, take 30 minutes to reach the airport, departing from Phaya Thai, Ratchaprarop, Makkasan, Asoke, Ramkhamhaeng, Hua Mak, Ban Thap Chang, and Lat Krabang stations, and will end at the last stop of Suvarnabhumi. The promotional fare will be Bt15 for all journeys during this period.

Meanwhile, Mr Supot said the baggage check-in system developed by SRT and Airports of Thailand (AoT) for Makkasan Station will be ready for full operation by the year end.

The transport official said there will be over 300 personnel working for the Airport Link project.

Concerning setting up a subsidiary firm to manage the project, Mr Supot said he will propose it to the ministry so that the company's registered capital can be increased from Bt500 million (US$15 million) to Bt2 billion (US$60 million). The matter will be then proposed to the Cabinet for consideration. (MCOT online news)
