The Express Service is a 15-minute non-stop journey between the City Terminal and the airport with a fare at Bt150 per trip. During the opening period, the fare charged will be Bt100.

So, for 2 people it would be 300bt - more than the cost of a taxi between the airport and Sukhumvit. And, the BTS doesn't even get me where I want to go, so I would have to pay additional to get to a hotel in Sukhumvit.

Add the issues that magnum has pointed out and this looks like a loser to me.

Rapid transit in the USA has its issues as well. But, the San Francisco BART (similar to BTS) did it right. Boarding station right at the International Terminal for easy on/off. Luggage space (well, you take the space that wheelchair/handicapped would take). And, about $8 USD per person to get me where I want to go.

They were offering free rides to the airport while I was in Bangkok. But, I'd already figured out that BTS to the Airport wasn't for me. Besides, my wife's uncle is a taxi driver and he picks us up at the airport anyway.

I'll give it a shot when I get back from PNH in the middle of rush hour. I'll be packed light. It's gotta be preferable to sitting parked on the tollway for an hour, a 1/2 mile from Ploenchit. wj

My taxi from the airport often seems to start queuing to get off the expressway (at Ploenchit), somewhere near Makkasan. Sometimes, this seems to be because five out of the six lanes on Sukhumvit are being used to go west (towards Siam Square) and only one to go to higher Suk.

When the new Airport link opens properly, hope that taxis picking up at the Makkasan station are not going to be feeding into the expressway here, otherwise the queuing may be even worse.

Anybody seen a map that shows how taxis are likely to get to Sukhumvit from Makkasan station?

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 23.8.2010 :-

Airport Link opens Monday 23.8.2010
============================

The airport rail link is scheduled to open for full commercial operations on Monday, the State Railway of Thailand says.

SRT governor Yutthana Tapcharoen yesterday said the rail operations would be divided into ordinary and express services.

The ordinary service, known as the city line, would charge a fare of 15 baht and would make eight stops along the Phaya Thai-Suvarnabhumi airport route.

The express line would run non-stop from Makkasan to the airport and would charge 100 baht.

He said both services would run from 6am to midnight with a train leaving every 15 minutes.

Baggage check-in at Makkasan station was not available yet as the line was still being test-run, Mr Yutthana said.

He said the check-in service was expected to be available later this year.

The Airport Rail Link is now operating free of charge from 6am to 10am and from 4pm to 9pm.

... congratulations to the Airports Authority of Thailand and State Railways of Thailand on a job well done... the rail system serving the international airport opens, what, about 3+ years AFTER the airport!?. with the Thai laser focus on precision planning (the BTS, Hopewell, etc.), it was not really so hard to see this coming, well in advance of the airport construction commencement.

... bravo, braaavo!

... it just goes on, and on, and on... but, I guess it is the best they can do.

(... my cynical rant for the day... can't seem to keep from spilling forth when I read about total abject corruption and incompetence as this)

Same with the Hong Kong Metro -- station directly in the Airport terminal (downstairs), and I get on, and a handful of stations later get off at Jordan, and walk to my hotel. Couldn't be easier.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 23 August 2010 :-

SRT rolls out Airport Rail Link today ( Monday 23 August 2010 )
===============================================

The 28km Airport Rail Link begins full commercial operations today to reduce travel time between the inner city and Suvarnabhumi airport in Samut Prakan.

The rail link will charge promotional fares until the end of the year on its city and express lines. It expects to serve up to 50,000 passengers a day.
The service has been operating on a trial basis since June 1, attracting about 17,000 people a day travelling for free.

State Railway of Thailand (SRT) governor Yutthana Thapcharoen yesterday led an inspection of the rail link and its facilities to ensure it was ready for commercial services.

Mr Yutthana insisted the link "is definitely good to go".

"It is the fastest rail system in the country," he said.

"It is convenient and provides [a quality] service."

Mr Yutthana said the SRT would ask the cabinet to raise the registered capital of a subsidiary firm to run the rail link from 500 million baht to 2 billion baht.

Transport Minister Sohpon Zarum is scheduled to inspect the rail link today to see if there were problems that needed to be fixed.

"I heard the train had a glitch and had to go back to Phaya Thai station," the minister said.

"That kind of thing can make passengers miss their flights."

Passengers using the City Line, the all-stops line, will pay a flat rate of 15 baht for a trip during the promotion period. The line, which operates from 6am to midnight, takes 30 minutes to travel from Phaya Thai station to Suvarnabhumi airport.

Those using the Express Line will pay 100 baht for a trip. It takes 15 minutes to travel from Makkasan station to the airport non-stop. It also operates from 6am to midnight.

Fares for the City Line will range from 15 baht to 45 baht, depending on the distance travelled, after Jan 1, 2011, while the fares on the Express Line would rise to 150 baht.

Passengers would be able to check in their baggage at Makkasan station for transfer to their airline once the service was fully operational.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 31 August 2010 :-

MRTA: Subway is well guarded
========================

The public can definitely be sure of their security at all subway train stations, Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRT) acting governor Yiamchai Chatkaew said on Tuesday.

Mr Yiamsaid was responding to Puea Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit's warning of possible sabotage of the subway train system.

He said tight security measures are in place at all subway train stations. All passengers are subject to bag checks. Closed-circuit surveillance cameras have been installed at all stations.

Security agencies have not issued any warning of possible sabotage and it was therefore not necessary for the MRTA to ask for support from the military, Mr Yiamchai said.

He said passengers can be sure of their safety when using the subway train.

MRTA bags checking is a joke...
Most of the time the guards are just standing around, not checking the bags or merely having a glance in them.
But from time to time they go into overdrive and do a deep inspection of all (farang) bags...
I was once denied entry at the chatuchack subway because I had 2 tiny peeling knives in my bag (just bought them from Chatuchak...), the guards were very excited finding them and one even spoke about...calling the police!(likely about the big bad armed farang willing to go on a killing rampage with his two knives...)
