Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 6 June 2007 :-

No business like Suvarnabhumi business
==============================

Airports of Thailand will launch a four-month programme of Thai culture and tradition at the 125-billion-baht international airport in an effort to encourage passengers to part with more cash.

The seven-million-baht marketing scheme would make air travellers feel very impressed with Thai culture and tradition, said Narongchai Tanachangsaeng, the airport's deputy general manager. This will stimulate them to shop more at the airport, where sales have been sluggish.

Special activities under the theme "Suvarnabhumi: The Beauty Given and the Impression Received" would help increase the state-run company's revenue, which will likely miss projections this year as fewer passengers fly through Bangkok. The authority projects 45-46 million passengers will enter Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang airports in 2007.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has said tourist arrivals will likely fall 300,000 short of its 14.8-million target. Tourists, particularly from Asia, have serious concerns over safety problems in the deep South and Bangkok.

Besides showing off Thai culture, the special campaign will also celebrate the fact that airport staff have served almost 27 million people since Suvarnabhumi opened its doors last September.

The special activities under the banner "Suvarnabhumi Airport: The Gateway to Asia" will be held within five zones. They are the Departure Passenger Hall, East Pavilion, West Pavilion, Transit Passenger Hall and Arrival International Passenger Hall.

Each zone will have its own special activity. For example, the Departure Passenger Hall will feature something called "Lucky Passenger", a performance on a circular stage with a diameter of three metres that spins 360 degrees.

Lucky passengers can enjoy special Thai dances while they are checking in. When they are not spinning, the dancers will pose as wax dummies for photos.

Do you think they would let me get a picture taken rubbing a 20 baht note on their butt cheeks?

20 bahts is too small an amount...... try using 2,000 bahts - you can tuck it into their breasts

haraplang, if you are travelling light, head upstairs to the departure level, and get the taxi there. You won't have to pay the airport surcharge. The best part is that there is normally no queue at all.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 13 June 2007 :-

Airport bus service hits turbulence - Travellers shun it and the costs are sky high
=============================================
Airport authorities may be satisfied with the smooth landing and take-off of planes at Suvarnabhumi, but the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) says providing a bus service to the airport is proving a costly headache. The city bus agency has been driven deeper into the red since it began serving the new airport in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district.

Every day the BMTA must collect 1.44 million baht, or 8,000 baht per vehicle, from fares to break even on its operational costs.

So far it has badly missed that target, taking an average 366,400 baht less than the required amount.

The average daily revenue per bus is only 5,964 baht.

The problem has added to the agency's already severe financial problems and it now has an accumulated debt of 54 billion baht, complained BMTA managing director Pinetr Purpatanakul.

The BMTA has deployed 180 air-conditioned buses on 11 airport routes since Suvarnabhumi opened for full operation on Sept 29 last year, with the aim of serving travellers, officials and everyone working at the new facility.

All routes are now showing a deficit. Even the most popular line, to Rangsit in Pathum Thani province, is struggling to break even with an average daily revenue per bus of only 7,522 baht.

''The Rangsit line is popular because most of its passengers are officials who used to work at Don Mueang airport.

''They use the BMTA bus to commute to work at Suvarnabhumi,'' said Mr Pinetr.

Most passengers on other routes are also officials and people working at the airport, he added. It was not popular with travellers.

The most promising route is the direct bus between Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airport.

More travellers need a public transport link since the old airport was re-opened on March 25 to ease congestion at Suvarnabhumi, said Mr Pinetr.

Don Mueang now serves domestic flights operated by all large airlines except Thai AirAsia and Bangkok Airways.

Thai Airways International has domestic flights out of both Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi.

The BMTA chief admitted that a plan to persuade people to take public buses to and from Suvarnabhumi had gone wrong. Most air travellers, including backpackers, had shunned them.

The buses were not convenient for passengers because they have luggage and the services do not take them directly to their destinations from the airport.

''Our goal could not be reached,'' he admitted.

Mr Pinetr believes the BMTA is a victim of the rush to open the airport because the bus agency had so little time to map out routes to best serve passengers.

The previous government under then prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra wanted to see Suvarnabhumi open during his tenure. But he was ousted from office by the armed forces on Sept 19, just 10 days before the opening.

Meantime, the BMTA is reviewing all routes in an attempt to lessen the financial losses of the Suvarnabhumi lines.

The study is due for completion at the end of this month.

Mr Pinitr promised that changes would be made, possibly to buses used and routes served, in the future.

Some lines would be changed, some unpopular routes could have ordinary buses to replace air-conditioned buses, and some routes running around the clock could be stopped late at night to save costs, he said.

''Change is inevitable,'' said the BMTA managing director.
