Most airlines won't upgrade you even if their business or first class is empty because they want you to use your upgrades or miles. I am 1K with United and it is rare that I get a free upgrade but they give me ample free e-upgrades, regionals and systemwides so I'm not complaining. I definitely agree that sticking with one airline makes a difference as far as perks are concerned. Double miles, lounge access on international flights, free upgrades, no luggage fees, etc.

This is correct. In my case, Cathay has three flights a day. So when I book my reservation (usually not more than a week before) I ask which flight is the most "booked". I then take that flight.

The majority of the time (remember the Chinese are always going from JFK to Hong Kong) the flight is overbooked, and as a 'diamond' member I am upgraded.

I have a feeling this system of upgrading is applicable to many airlines. However, be aware that this only works if you are high up the totem pole and fly with this airline often.

I have collected plenty of miles with China Airlines, but additionally I manage an upgrade without miles costs a couple of times - it helps to drop my Dad's Airline ID out of my passport innocuously (he's a Captain on a commercial airline) and after some banter about being an airline brat, I either usually get an entire row to myself in the first row (my preferred) or an upgrade to Business Class.

I use the miles only when I have to.

My personal experience is that one receives upgrades under the following conditions:

1. You travel often with the particular airline, and they are over booked in economy.

2. You use mileage to upgrade.

3. It is your birthday on day of travel. Don't laugh; this has happened to me at least five of the past six years. I also travel too much...

4. You reach a particular milestone with the airline. For example when I reached the 500,000 (real) miles with Cathay, they upgraded me to first and really gave me the royal treatment from the moment I arrived at JFK, until I landed in BKK, and had a beautiful CX employee escort me out of the airport. Sorry nothing else happened or you would have read about it already.

5. I have NEVER been upgraded except for the above. I always buy economy; and even if business class is empty, the airlines will NOT upgrade. You explained in your post, WHY!

I hope this info helps some of you to plan your next trip. But again I must emphasize that I always try and travel with the same airline and stay at same brand hotels. It saves me tons of money, and especially at the hotels, it ALWAYS gets me upgraded.

One other point: If you do use the same airline and hotel chain, they will quote you the lowest price even if that level is sold out. Before I was a diamond member I would have to pay on CX during the busy season up to $2,000 for an economy seat when I booked a few days before the flight. Now (the past two years) the price is between (800-1,200 Dollars), usually closer to $800.

Prices on United from LAX seem to be $100s more than last year,

Since I am 1K on United and get 2x FF miles and 3 -70 pound bags, flying United helps,

Does anyone know a Travel agent in Los Angeles or ???? that gets any deal on United flights ?

I would like to go for a couple weeks in March

thanks for your help

The answer is, despite your desire to earn more miles, don't fly United...you'll find the cheapest fares from west coast US to Thailand on either China Air or EVA. Their [non-high season especially] prices have gone DOWN over the past year!

I paid $800+ on China in August 2009; $1028 on EVA in December 2009, and I just paid $982 for March 2010. All round-trip fares (including all taxes and fees) from SFO.

while I agree Eva, china air ETC are less,

the Double FF miles end up giving me a free trip for 2 paid for trips,

My flight is $1075 LAX -BKK in March on United, but last year it was $800 or so,

and the cheapest I found was $875 on Delta'

Even flights to Europe this winter have not been discounted, normally $500 or so are $7-800.

I just hope it goes back to the $7-800 range LAX-Bkk-LAX

I just booked on Korean Air for April for $809 inclusive out of Seattle, including my connecting flight to Seattle. cheapest I've payed in a long time.

25 pounds carry on bag, and 2 checked bags at 50 pounds each.

I booked throught Bing.com. They seem to be the cheapest right now. Booking to fly out on a Sunday seems to be the cheapest.

I flew United for the first time on my trip to BKK a couple of weeks ago and paid about $1100 from East Coast, which was the best I found on 7 days notice.

Overall, I was very pleased with the service, but the plane did not have TV screens on the seat in front of you on any leg of the flight. It didnt matter from the US to Tokyo as I had a complete back row of 4 seats to myself and I built a makeshift fort (like when you were a kid) with blankets and pillows and was a happy camper

The food wasnt as good as Korean (my usual carrier), nor were the flight attendants nearly as attractive

But, they never stopped the flow of red wine, which Korean did to me after 4 glasses in a period of 2 1/2 hours last year...unfortunatly, that flight had one specified attendant for my section and she said, "you drink 4 glasses already" and wouldnt oblige when I asked for another....BTW, I wasnt even close to being drunk

I was like, "listen, it has been over 2 hours and we got 12 more to go, so dont even tell me I am cut off!" she offered to put me on a glass an hour limit, but I just took my ambien then and went to sleep about 4 hours and a couple of movies before I wanted to

OK back to United, the best part about their customer service was when my bag was delayed on the last leg coming home and they tracked it and said sorry mr. atl but your bag is on the next flight into the atl and took my address and a delivery service had it at my house about 5 hours later (3am, but I wasnt asleep)

So the good part about that was since I was a first time flyer, instead of giving me a $250 voucher they doubled it and I recieved a $500 voucher for any domestic or international flight with United, valid for 12 months

Conclusion, I will probably use my United voucher and miles from that trip domestically and revert back to Korean for my next BKK flight

However, next time I will purchase a bottle of red wine (with a screw cap) from duty free beforehand....that way no smokin' hot Korean wine nazi can interfere with my routine

Oh, good - alcohol *and* Ambien. Seriously, Dude, there's a reason why you're not supposed to combine these drugs with alcohol. Short term memory loss, amnesic behavior combined with loss of inhibitions is just the beginning.

It appears you had a very smart Flight Attendant in charge, obviously on a non-US, asian airline, where they know how to deal with drunks.
