Yes and because it's more convenient this way the departure tax is now 700 baht.

My flight connection in BKK from Phuket on to Frankfurt involved a one hour odyssey with stairs, buses, escalators, a second pass through immigration and a half hour walk to the gate where I had to dig my ticket back out of my bag, the boarding pass, held no merit.

I could live with DonMuang and paying my 500 baht departure tax manually. Who designed this airport Microsoft?

Report from The Nation dated Thursday 15 June 2007 :-

Airlines want just one Bangkok airport
=============================

The Board of Airline Representatives (BAR) in Thailand will ask the next elected government to switch back to having just one airport in Bangkok in order to improve capability and competitiveness.

BAR president Brian Sinclair-Thompson yesterday said airline operators wanted to operate solely from the new Suvarnabhumi Airport as they had already invested in facilities and infrastructure there.

"The opening of two airports in Bangkok - Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang - was not a good solution for airlines because the airlines cannot move operations and people around," said Sinclair-Thompson, who is also general manager, Thailand, for Swiss International Air Lines.

Using only the new airport would help passengers in transit to catch their connecting domestic and international flights more easily, he said at a meeting organised by the Thailand Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators in Bangkok yesterday.

Seventy per cent of passengers at Suvarnabhumi Airport are transit passengers, he said, adding that travellers do not want to spend much time at airports.

The BAR will also propose that the government stop operating domestic flights from Don Mueang and use it to serve only charter, non-commercial and special flights.

Sinclair-Thompson said the BAR would discuss the matter with the government, Airports of Thailand (AOT) and the Civil Aviation Department.

"We know that this is not an easy matter, but we expect the change will take six months to two years," he said.

He said airlines wanted the government to develop more facilities and services at Suvarnabhumi Airport instead of spending money on resurrecting Don Mueang, which was closed for a brief period until the military-installed government reopened it for some domestic flights.

They also want the AOT to build a mid-field terminal at Suvarnabhumi to increase the airport's capacity to 60 million passengers a year.

The BAR president also called on airport authorities to add more contact gates to serve large aircraft like the Airbus A380, improve the turnaround services for aircraft and complete the construction of another runway that had been suspended.

Another important request is to consider reducing the airport charges, particularly parking and landing fees, as well as 10 other airport service fees.

"AOT charges airport fees 15- to 20-per-cent higher than most regional airports, including rivals Singapore and Malaysia," Sinclair-Thompson said.

All these factors could cost the country the chance to become a regional aviation hub, he added.

Thai dishes fail to fly
================

Thai food is one of the most popular in the world, but THAI food, by Thai Airways International, has got a solid thumbs-down by international flyers.

The poor quality of the food served by Thai Airways International (known by the acronym THAI) tops the list of complaints among passengers using the national flag carrier, according to the airline.

The list of passenger complaints for April, which recently reached Transport Minister Theera Haocharoen, pits the airline's meals at the top of the five most common complaints.

"What passengers complained most about were meals which did not live up expectations, especially on outbound flights from Bangkok. That was followed by complaints they did not receive special meals as requested," the survey says.

In-flight entertainment was second on the list of areas where the airline could improve, followed by attitude and performance of cabin crew, baggage handling on arrival, and defects or malfunctions of cabin equipment.

No in-seat TVs on aircraft was the second most common complaint. Passengers were also not happy with crew who were impolite or unwilling to perform their duties, it adds.

The airline compiles complaints and commendations every month. The April version is the latest report available.

Some ministers complained about THAI's in-flight service during the cabinet meeting last week, Adm Theera said. The minister said THAI must do better.

THAI president Apinan Sumanseni admitted to the problems and said THAI is trying to improve all services, which could take about three months.

Not really related to the airport, but some valid points....not really. While having a personalized entertainment system would be a plus, keep dreaming about good airplane food. I was writing a trip report on a barf bag on my last flight and when the stewardess saw this she asked if I wanted stationay and brought me some. Plus the drinks came around frequently.

I give them credit for tying to improve, but I think unhappy customers with unrealistic expectations are just a fact of life sometimes.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 5 July 2007 :-

New airport is unsafe, checks below par, says IATA report
===========================================

Suvarnabhumi Airport is unsafe with checks on people and their belongings in the passenger terminal falling below standard, says the International Air Transport Association. IATA's safety study of the airport found that standards are inferior to those of Don Mueang airport, said an Airports of Thailand source who obtained the report.

The study aimed at maintaining security standards at international airports will be tabled for discussion by AoT board members today. The meeting will be chaired by Gen Saprang Kalayanamitr, who also is deputy secretary-general of the Council for National Security.

The report found there are many spots in the passenger terminal where checked passengers can meet people who have not passed through security, from whom they can receive unchecked parcels or objects and then carry them on board aircraft.

Those soft spots include checkpoints D and G where checked people and outsiders are separated by one-metre-high glass partitions.

Transit passenger lounges are not completely sealed because there is space between the glass partitions through which objects can be passed.

IATA recommends AoT separate checked people and people who have not passed through security in the passenger terminal, and keep arriving and departing passengers apart.

It also suggests AoT deploy its own security staff instead of contracting out the job, and use equipment which can check large objects and animals.

AoT must take stricter precautions in issuing temporary passes for access to restricted areas in the terminal and more thoroughly check visiting vehicles, according to the study.

IATA represents the commercial airline industry with 250 member airlines.

In an attempt to address IATA's concerns, the airport authority has asked staff to secure the partitions through which checked passengers could receive unchecked items, the source said.

It also ordered its contractor, the Loxley-ICTS consortium, to step up security measures around the clock, the source added.

AoT has hired the Engineering Institute of Thailand to check fire safety standards at the terminal. The checks will take 90 days and cost 5.5 million baht.

The institute conducted an initial survey and recommended that AoT clear fire escapes blocked by shops and piles of goods.

The engineering institute will now check the physical aspects of fire exits, fire-detection systems and the readiness of fire-fighting equipment.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 17 July 2007 :-
Van, taxi drivers blockade airport
=========================

Police arrested more than 30 passenger van and taxi drivers who staged a protest by blocking the entrance to the arrivals terminal at Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday.

The protest was in response to a police crackdown on their services, which they operate without necessary permission.

About 100 protesters gathered on the first floor of the terminal, but some used their vehicles to block gates on the fourth floor. Airport authorities arranged special lanes for other vehicles, reducing the impact on airline passengers.

The blockade continued until late in the evening, when police decided to disperse the protesters, arresting 33 drivers and impounding 30 vehicles.

The protesters, many of whom work for tourism companies, demanded the airport relax regulations and allow them to provide services while their registrations are being processed.

However, the airport has refused as it says it is difficult to differentiate them from illegal van operators.
Police round up some of the protesting drivers at Suvarnabhumi airport yesterday.

"Van operators affiliated to tourism firms ask that they have a chance to register with the airport, while illegal operators only need to have direct talks with police on their demands," said deputy airport director Chaturongkapol Sodmanee after a meeting between the officials and representatives of the protesters and the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA).

ATTA president Apichart Sankary said the problem with passenger vans has existed since the airport opened last year and remains unsolved.

In order to enter the airport, the drivers are required to go through a complicated registration process which may take six months to complete. Since many vans are operated by or sub-contracted to tourism firms which want to provide a service to their customers, not general airport passengers, they asked that the airport show leniency.

Mr Apichart said the association had received a lot of complaints from these drivers and earlier asked Transport Minister Theera Haocharoen to consider their demand. Tourists' needs have changed and vans are more in demand than large coaches, he said.

The association asked the minister to allow the passenger vans to operate for six to 12 months, until the problem is solved. The minister agreed to look into the matter, Mr Apichart said.

"The problem is not new. Police should only crack down on ghost [illegal] vehicles," he said, referring to those not working with tourism companies.

Land Transport Department deputy chief Chairat Sanguansue insisted his department could not relax the regulations.

"All van and taxi drivers must change their vehicle type registration from private use to public use before they can provide a service at the airport," he said.

This was to protect passengers and the public in general from being cheated.

Ok, if I put it like this; I didn't pay departure tax in cash at the airport.
When did they start include it in the ticket price?
